DAY 117

I pretty much discovered Mclusky the old fashioned way, when Mclusky Does Dallas came out it was reviewed a bunch of places and reviewed well. So I checked them out and immediately fell in love. Finding anything on vinyl has been a chore so when this was announced as a special release for Record Store Day I jumped at the chance and grabbed it.

I am often down on compilations and man, I wish this wasn't but it was my only option. That said, it's got some killer tracks on it, it's basically all of their singles and rarities. I don't know how stuff was chosen necessarily because the CD was a 3 disc set. Mclusky always struck me as a particularly pure band. They may not be, it might all be artifice but I know pretty much since punk started there have always been people who really wanted to be an obnoxious punk band but so many fail. A lot are too cute, a lot pull back instead of going all in. There is just often something missing and it feels like a wink and a nod. It's almost a deep desire to be liked so they are going to act kind of like assholes but they need people to know they're not really. Which, of course, is not that punk rock. You're not supposed to care what other people think. So I like a lot of those snotty bands but they also often don't quite pull off what they want. Mclusky doesn't have that problem, they might be the nicest people in the world but you wouldn't know it from their records. I think for me what defines them is that they are willing to start a song with, "All of your friends are cunts and your mother was a ballpoint pen thief". Besides being such an odd insult at the end it just sums them up, here is where they say something mean and they don't back off. They play aggressive, noisy post hardcore and they really don't seem to care if they piss people off. Or no, that's not true, they sound like they want to piss people off. So they care. This album is a lot of fun for me because I do get to hit some of my favorites from their catalog.
