this week, made me wonder if a project like the MCOE would've been possible 40 years ago. Because yes, there were big charity events like Live Aid in the pre-internet era, but those were one-time disastee relief donation campaigns. Getting this many people to donate regularly over more than 5 years, in large parts through online subscriptions for socks, undies and other household necessities? I don't think that would've worked through TV or newspapers. So maybe some of that optimism was justified after all. (Though if anyone knows of a comparable project in the past, I'd love to hear about it!)

Food Hub: Accomplishments and Challenges

The first step in working toward increasing local food consumption was for everyone in the group to understand agriculture in the St. Louis region. We started by reading about efforts that strengthened the presence of locally produced crops and meats in the larger food marketplace. We compared and contrasted Kansas City, a successful example of how proper planning and research allowed for successful farm to table policies, and Illinois, an unsuccessful one that exemplified the need for preparation. One key component of the Kansas City study was a survey of producers and consumers that identified the best areas to allocate resources. One such area was the development of food hub infrastructure.

Currently we are finishing the surveys that will allow our client to analyze the market to determine what is needed from a food hub by both farms and purchasing institutions. After completion of the surveys we will develop a marketing and education plan so that eating local is seen as a priority to people in the St. Louis region. While we are still figuring out what this will look like, we are planning to use the design process to create effective materials that will benefit the greater St. Louis area.
