@crimedawgbylaw is doing the heavy lifting in re: old mctreeg, so please allow me to grab some low hanging fruit and keep up the #chicago run a bit longer. This is the first Tree song I heard, and honestly it wasn’t obvious who was Tone and who was Tree because who thinks the unconventional verse is the headliner? Anyway, seven years later, and that second verse is still such a massive introduction:

Found a link to this 2011 freestyle mixtape while combing Tree’s youtube profile. Evidence of his ridiculously good taste, Tree jumps on all kinds of classics from “Cot Damn” to “Still Tippin” to DG Yola’s “Ain’t Gon Let Up.” Of course, I was immediately drawn to “Honor Roll,” where Tree drops some nostalgic raps over my favorite Lil Wayne loosie “La La La.” Here’s the link to the mixtape, Pluto.

One of my all-time favorite rap artists, Chicago MC/Producer Tree just dropped his first project since 2020′s The Blue Tape. The album is only available on Bandcamp for now, but make sure to check it out because he is a unique voice in rap music, consistently bringing his personal life to the table, often delivered with the soul and cadence of an old Blues legend.
This release from the “inventor of soul trap” is a special one to me...because we are finally receiving an unreleased joint with Roc Marciano that I have literally been begging Tree for since 2016 haha...
