It’s done! Thank you @ace-of-5pades for the suggestion! I got sidetracked half way through and started playing tears of the kingdom, but I managed to finish it (only after my switch died tho)

Impulse felt his breath leave his lungs in one fell swoop once Bdubs had padded out the door, clock in hand. His hand still rested on the chest's lid, holding it open to reveal the four raw golden clumps.
He wasn't sure why, but when Bdubs had requested a clock as a wedding present Impulse had felt panic creep up his spine. He wouldn't be able to recall why, not ever, but he had dropped all his plans to upgrade the farm and hide their cows to go deep into the world to find gold and redstone for his husband's clock.
But his husband had gone out to steal some gold for Impulse incase he couldn't find any. Bdubs had risked making enemies to steal gold for his own present. It wasn't some impossible trial or quest with the odds stacked against him.
The odds have been stacked exactly in his favor. By the trial maker no less. Bdubs had wanted him to succeed. It wasn't a test.
A soft, incorporal voice whispered to him. Because the universe loves you.
You have played the game well.
Your first game was spent being loyal to none but trusting all. Your second game was spent being loyal to too many, and trusting them all the same.
His first life was spent fighting for something he did not believe in. His second life was spent fighting for someone who could not commit to him.
You are not alone.
In you. He will have someone who will put him above a single life.
In him. You will have someone who would set the world ablaze for you.
Impulse finally felt air reenter his lungs as Bdubs called to him from outside. He smiled.

Mumbo awoke all at once. The nerves in his thighs were aching in a way that only meant something had happened to his prosthetics. His head was a mishmash of drowning pain, the spot behind his right eye was a hotspot for pain.
He let out a groan, curling in on himself to hopefully allow for an easier and softer rise to uprightness. A
clawed hand on his shoulder slowed him down but didn't stop him, sliding over to the curve of his spine, helping him unravel it into a stretch.
"Careful there, Zloy nearly worked himself into a fit when he saw the state of your 'netics"
The comforting murr of Impulse broke the near-silence, and one look told Mumbo that the dragon had probably been the one looking over him that night, that or the slight bags under his eyes were from continuous working on that damn wing prototype.
Mumbo let himself nod his head slowly in acknowledgment, sweeping the small backroom of their friends' clinic. His brow creased in worry at the absence of his roommate, expecting the brightly coloured hybrid to have been here.
"Did Grian already go home, or did Pix nag him into going to pick up some lunch?"
The tired but soft expression on Impulse's face fell immediately, and Mumbo's stomach nearly fell on the floor. The dragon hybrid's tail swished uneasily before curling around its owner's left leg in tight, anxious coils.
"We-"
Impulse was interrupted by the door opening, revealing an exhausted and bruised Tango. The demon let out a long-suffering sigh, eyes glued to the floor before addressing Impulse.
"We still couldn't find Grian, it's not like you can just lo-"
Tango cut himself off as his eyes raised to meet Mumbo's horrified ones. Mumbo watched as the blonde's eyes desperately sought out Impulse's, begging for some kind of out, but the damage was already done, and the cat had shredded the bag already. Mumbo stumbled to his feet, swiftly grabbing onto the demon for support as they both rose.
"Wha- WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU COULDNT FIND HIM?!"
