2100: Screenwriting:The Short Film

We’re in week 2 now, and so far we’ve been through the three act structure; the protagonist “want or question”

The conflict of the plot that usually goes as:

Intrapersonal

Interpersonal

Extrapersonal

And the “structure of information” given to the audience:

The audience knows LESS than the characters - MYSTERY

The SAME as the character - IDENTIFICATION

 MORE than the characters - DRAMATIC IRONY/ SUSPENSE

We watched The Lunch Date (1989) by Adam Davidson.

In the seminar we brainstormed from where the inspiration for writing comes. The three main are usually:

Experience

Research

Imagination

We made some really cool character exercises from the book Playwriting: A Practical Guide, by Noel Greig. I took a copy from the library and I am so far amazed with all the exercises and outcomes I tried.

There’s two main structures that a protagonist may follow:

the journey

the ritual occasion

WEEK 2

We’re going over Personal Memories/ Experiences, as it was one of the things that we wrote down as a source of inspiration for our writing.

Why do we like to hear stories? For detail, suspense/mystery, humour, relatability, dynamic and the 4 big emotions : Fear, happiness, anger, sadness.

We watched My Father, the Liar and Barrie the Barber.

Short films are like the tip of a iceberg. The audience will only see 1/10, they don’t need to know the rest, but we do.

What is it about? What is it REALLY about?

“If the scene’s about what the scene’s about, you’re in deep shit.”
