Location scouting

Location For this assignment, I chose the cemetery next to The Parish of St Mary and Christ Church in Hendon. Although a bit hidden, it’s located in great proximity to the Middlesex University and I believe it has a great potential to serve as a film location. 

Differentiated in the terrain, full of old stone graves, shaped in different styles, from richly ornamented with floral patterns, through angel statues to celtic crosses. From two sides it’s surrounded by lawns of the Sunny Hill Park, so if desired, hiding that it is located in London would be easy to achieve. 

The church built in English Gothic style guards the land since XI century, and although the church itself is completely renovated, the place still has an intense atmosphere of the ages that passed.

Facilities Electricity and toilets are easily accessible in the church building. I’m sure that it would be possible to arrange preparing hot drinks and place for actors to rest. Directly next to the church, there’s a functioning pub so catering wouldn’t be a problem.

Transport The parish doesn’t own any parking space, but there are a couple of possible solutions. A few cars can fit on the street behind the graveyard. I presume it would be possible to use the nearby parkings for residents. Additionally, there always is the university parking just round the corner. The nearest bus stop is located 5min away.

Inconveniences The biggest inconvenience will create the elementary school on the opposite side of the road. Especially in mornings, afternoons and during periods, the kids are getting very noisy, so it may be necessary to film during the weekends or school holidays. From a certain angle, from time to time, it is possible to spot a plane in the sky, so it’s something to pay attention for. However, the distance is big enough, so the sound of engines is practically inaudible.

Location scouting Report – Sunny Hill Park

About this location:

 Sunny Hill Park can be found in Hendon and is a very large and hilly park. It lies perfectly between my home and university. A small café can be found in the park as well.

 Why this location:

 Sunny Hill Park would be a good location if you decide to shoot outside because it is close to University and to my home. This makes it very easy to bring equipment there or meet actors at uni and escort them to the park.

 Size:

The size of the park leaves the crew with a lot of freedom as to how they want their film to look. There are loads of incredibly wide open spaces.

Variety:

This park offers a big variety of different shots since it can offer so many different places. There are hills (which can have the city as a background), flat spaces, there are trees. You can also find benches and one big tree that has fallen down.

Electricity:

As it is a park it will be difficult to find sockets anywhere close but it could be an option to use battery driwwen LED lights for instance or if the shooting spot was close to the café maybe we could arrange something with them. It would also be possible to have a generator if it wasn’t a uni production.

 Toilets:

There are three options for toilets. We can either order portable toilets. We could go and talk to the café or we could use Uni bathrooms if we pick a spot that is close to uni.

 Traffic:

The traffic noise depends on how close you film to the street. Most of the time you can’t hear any traffic noise unless you get close to the exits of the park. At nighttime there is even less noise.

 Interruptions:

There are a few joggers and people walking with their dogs… Even when taking the pictures I had to wait sometimes to wait for people to walk out of the frame so it would be better to maybe film on a Sunday or you will have to be ready for a few interruptions maybe.

 Weather:

As it is outside, weather is very important. In the case of rain, there has to be a weather cover which could either be uni or we could bring a gazebo to quickly put the equipment, cast and crew underneath.

 Security:

 With all those people passing around, I think it would be advisable to have one crew member that watches out for people’s belongings and unused equipment the whole time the shoot takes place.

For our assignment in creating a 3-minute experimental film I paired up with Andre. Seeing, as we were starting very early in our assignment we had little time to conceive an idea. At first we were considering of doing a short film of the camera surveying a room of a less then pleasant individual and have him narrate his view of the world and the audience would make assumptions about his past without ever actually seeing the character.

However, after speaking with our tutor David Heinemann, we realised that this is a very ambitious project and we there would be no way to achieve this in the time given competently.

In order to complete the brief, we decided to implement a already used technique as seen in the above video, from Sergio Leone’s “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. We figured if we used this model to extend a moment and add tension to what otherwise would be a rather straightforward scenario, to a rather regular situation - the waiting room for a job interview. By matching the eye-lines accordingly and the pacing of the video with the soundtrack, as well as withholding the exact location the subjects were in, I had hoped to make a otherwise ordinary situation dramatic.
