When The Office Manager Barges In While You’re Talking Smack About Her

Vivian turns the knob to Mr. Todd’s office and enters the lion’s den.

Vivian: Mr. Todd, I need to talk to you.

Gavin Todd: (scowling) Can it wait?

Vivian: No, sir, it can’t.

Gavin Todd stops what he’s doing, gives Vivian a chilling look, and leans back in his chair.

Gavin Todd: Very well, then. What is it that’s so important?

Vivian starts to speak.

Jonas Nicholas’ desk is right next to Mr. Todd’s office, and he can hear the normally soft-spoken Vivian speaking in a forceful, angry tone. 

The loud click-clacking of his typewriter keys make it impossible to make out what they’re saying, so he stops typing, leans toward the door, and tries to listen in.

Vivian: I’m a really good worker. I start working 5 minutes early every day, I do everything that’s asked of me, I don’t complain, and I work overtime when needed. I deserve to be treated with respect.

Vivian notices Mr. Todd’s expression start to change. Is he smiling or smirking or...? Is he laughing at her? Vivian’s not sure. She charges on.

Vivian: This morning, I walked through snow, I walked through sludge, I navigated around road work (she ticks off each item on her fingers), and if it hadn’t been for me diligently getting to this building a half hour early every single day, I would have been 31 minutes late. As it is, I got here at 7:31. And now Shirley is threatening me, and I’ve had it with her. 

Just then, there’s a quick, soft tap-tap on the door, followed immediately by Shirley opening the door and walking swiftly into the office. 

Jonas Nicholas watches as Shirley enters the fray. 

Jonas Nicholas: Oh, this is getting good.

Downton Abbey ends up in a lot of weird places from trying to appease modern values while giving glimpses at older values, but I think the one that hits weirdest for me is Carson’s very modern homophobia. What is the point of having the character who shouts that Thomas should be horsewhipped know that you don’t choose to be gay? Did that knowledge really make Carson’s homophobia more palatable to the average viewer? If anything to me it makes him even less sympathetic, but you know, most of the audience agrees that Carson is “a kind man”, so maybe it did.

Look, I am an easily fooled child who has never read a history book, I’m not demanding that the level of historical accuracy be raised (my understanding is that it’s considerably above average for a period drama), but it sometimes seems almost as if they go out of their way to avoid historicism, which is strange to me.

My boss is always quick to yell at people. I know he's not a bad person, but it really makes me uncomfortable. Even if he's not yelling at me. Could you please make a sigil that's something like "be quite" or "don't yell"?

Insider Info: Shirley is a conglomeration of all the bad traits of the bad bosses of my past. Despite my personal history with the Shirley Blalocks of the world, I really enjoy writing her and coming up with petty and annoying things for her to say and do.

Office: Shirley Strikes Again

Shirley: Good morning, Vivian!

Vivian: Good morning.

Vivian tries to put on her best fake smile but doesn’t do a very good job.

Shirley: I’m going to need you to do the branch office financials for Mr. Newell today.

Vivian: Okay sure, just show me what I need to do.

Shirley: Well, that’s the thing. I don’t have time to train you because I’m really busy today.

Vivian: But I don’t have any accounting experience and I’ve never done those before. I know they’re important, and I wouldn’t want to mess them up.

Shirley: Just do your best to figure it out and hand them into me when you’re done. I’ll go over them.

Vivian: Okay.

Vivian does the financials and gives them to Shirley, pointing out all the things she wasn’t sure about. That afternoon, she sees Shirley talking to Mr. Newell; he seems very unhappy about something.

Vivian: I hope that conversation isn’t about the branch office financials.

Mr. Newell goes back into his office, and Shirley calls Vivian over to her desk.

Shirley: Mr. Newell doesn’t like the way you did the financials. He’s pretty annoyed with you. He says he only wants me to do them from now on.

Vivian: But I thought that you...

Shirley: It’s fine, Vivian. I pushed you beyond your limited capabilities. It’s just that I have so much to do. I guess I’ll just stay late to get everything done. It’s a burden, sure, but I don’t mind as long as the job gets done right.

Vivian: I’ll just go in and apologize to Mr. Newell and explain that I don’t have any experience or training in that area.

Shirley: No, no. Stop right there. Mr. Newell is very busy today, too. If you interrupt him, it will just add to his frustration. Don’t worry about it. It will blow over in a few days.

Vivian knows that Shirley is right about Mr. Newell. He was the type that didn’t want to be bothered with the inner workings of the office; he just wanted his stuff to get done and he didn’t care how. He would be even more annoyed by Vivian if she went in now and tried to explain what happened.

Vivian goes back to her desk, feeling completely defeated, and is in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

Down with Pickleface, Up with Bette Davis

Vivian is at her mother-in-law’s with the other women in the family to watch a Bette Davis movie that comes on in about 15 minutes.

Julie: How’s your job at the insurance agency going, Vivian? How’s Pickleface?

All of her friends and family know Vivian’s secret nickname for her boss is “Pickleface.”

Vivian: To be honest, it’s not going well. I’ve been really upset about something that happened last week.

Vivian proceeds to tell the story of how Pickleface had her do a project but didn’t provide any training or instructions, said she’d correct Vivian’s work but didn’t, and turned it in to one of the managers like that. This caused the manager to be upset with Vivian, which caused Vivian to be upset for the rest of the week.

Vivian: I don’t know why she wouldn’t train me or at least look everything over before handing it in. It doesn’t make any sense to do it that way. It just caused her more work in the end.

Julie: It makes total sense. She set you up.

Vivian: Do you really think so? But why?

Julie: It sounds like she wanted to make herself look good to the manager at your expense. She wants him to see how valuable she is to him and that nobody else can do what she does.

Vivian: Oh. My. Watcher. She did set me up. I didn’t even realize. Why would anyone do something so terrible to another person?!

Demoyn: Who knows what’s going on in her weird, little pickle head? People like that are just unhappy, and they spread unhappiness wherever they go.  

Comfort: Is there anybody you can talk to about it so she doesn’t get away with it? What about that president guy? I thought you got along with him. Could you tell him?

Vivian: You mean the VP, Mr. Todd? He has been acting a little strange toward me lately. Like not mean, but not friendly either. He has been very businesslike, which has actually been kind of nice. If I went to him with this problem, it might give him the idea he can talk to me about other things, and sometimes he gets too personal. I’d rather not involve him.

Vivian is getting annoyed again just thinking about it.

Vivian: I really need this drink.

Comfort: But it’s just strawberry lemonade.

Vivian: I know, but I really need it.

Something about the sugary sweet taste helps to calm Vivian down.

Julie: Do you want me to come by your work and punch her in her pickle nose? I grew up with brothers, so I know how to hit.

While Vivian knows her mother-in-law isn’t actually going to go around punching people in the face, the thought of it makes Vivian laugh.

Vivian: Thanks; it’s okay. I’m not going to stay there much longer, so I’ll just keep my head down and collect my paycheck. I just wish people would leave their crazy at home instead of bringing it to the office.

Comfort: (agreeing) In a perfect world...

Julie: It’s almost time for the movie. Should I switch the television on?

Vivian: Yes please! 

Comfort: What’s this movie called?

Vivian: I looked it up in the guide. It’s called “Dark Victory.” I haven’t seen this one before.

Vivian has seen most of the movies Bette Davis has made so far. She usually goes to see them at the theater as soon as they come out.

Julie: (raises her glass) Down with all the Picklefaces of the world and up with Bette Davis!

Everyone laughs and raises their glasses, and Julie gets up and switches on the television. Vivian feels better just knowing she has the support of her family.
