❤️ this story by @namitapdx 11.21.2018 I’ve worn these bangles since I was 16. My Dadu designed them and had them made in Brazil for my mom in 1963, just before she emigrated to the US. She’d never had gold bangles as a girl. A shocking absence when you consider her age - born in 1940 - and raised in India with a mother who loved jewelry. As they are growing too small for me to comfortably remove at airports (2 broke this year from being taken on and off twice or more a month), mom #gifted me with a lovely set of new bangles. Leila now wears the set Dadu made for my mom, her Aji. Being asked to bring a piece of jewellery to be photographed that meant a lot to me I chose my silver, larimer and mirror 'talisman' that I made when I very first started my business and wore constantly for many years. I have chosen to photograph my gold ring as it is important to me in two ways. Firstly it is my wedding ring of 33 years marriage to my wonderful wife Anne. Secondly it was made by my mum who at 91 this year and has decided that she cannot create as much jewellery work as she used to.

My ring:

I bought it from jewellery artist directly when I visited a small market. I felt this ring called me when I first saw it. I said to the artist, that it looks like a protection charm . She said that “yes, it is, this ring will be bought by a person who needs it, so this ring brought you here.”　After that I researched the stone’s meaning. It means ‘seed of hope’. This stone helps you to know what is your purpose of your life or with the realisation of your dream. So I believe that this ring guides me for my happy life.

There is an another interesting story. One day I lost it. I looked for it for a long time but I couldn’t find it and I apologised in my heart to the ring and then the ring fell from somewhere suddenly. I was surprised and promised I would never ever lose it again.

I think this ring is alive with me. The eye watches over me.

What is time?

Time is meaningful to us all. Not enough of it, too much of it etc. Timekeeping is another matter. I’m always late for personal things. Always on time for work (even early), just about on time for college and always late for everything else. I never set out to be late, it just happens. A phone call as I’m about to leave, or a neighbour knocking on the door, or my mum wanting something (she’s disabled and I care for her), or just me faffing around and not keeping an eye on the time.

My Nan gave me a necklace watch about 10 years ago. I can’t wear ordinary watches as the metal in straps and/or buckles makes my skin itch terribly. Plastic straps don’t help as the skin sweats underneath and I still end up itching and coming up in a rash.

My late Grandad gave the necklace watch to my nan for her 50th birthday (she’s now 93). She decided to pass it onto me to help me with my timekeeping. It’s a wind up clock/watch, which is a huge relief from the battery operated stuff that is everywhere.

Problem is though, whilst not valuable, the sentimental value is enormous and I’m scared I’m going to damage it or lose it. So I only wear it when I’m working and I need to watch the time. I never wear it for personal socialising or at home or anywhere other than work. I’d be so upset if I lost or damaged it, as it can’t be replaced.

But when I do wear the necklace watch, I always think of my Nan, how kind she is, how abrupt and cutting she can be at times and of how much I love her and she loves us. I always think how lucky we are to still have her here with us (she’s 93).
