　「ネタニヤフ級 (“Netanyahu-class”)」という級名は、【トランプ級戦艦 (“Trump-class Battleship”)】(1) を真似した揶揄です。

　「ビビ (“Bibi”)」はベンヤミン・ネタニヤフのニックネームで (2)、「挽肉製造器 (“Meat Chopper”)」は、朝鮮戦争時––––「連合軍が制空権を…奪ったため…むしろ、水平射撃による地上支援に活躍し……対人用として強大な破壊力を示し…人海戦術で押し寄せる中国人民志願軍に対して大きな効果を挙げた」【M16対空自走砲】(3) ––––のニックネームで、それをそのまま、この戦車の渾名にしました。

　この調理器具の一纏めにされて売られていた十枚の刃と円盤 (4-a, -b) は、滞米中に古道具店で見つけて興味をそそられて買ってみたものの、どんな作品にどう使えるか思い付かず (付けず)、ずっと蔵ってあったものです。

　これを先端棒金具を車軸にして組み上げてから気付いたのですが、この車軸の突き出た両尖端は、1959年のアメリカ映画『ベン・ハー』の戦車競走の場面に登場するメッサラの戦車のそれ (5-a～-d) に、ちょっと似ています。

　それは更に––––と言っても制/製作された順番は逆ですが––––レオナルド ・ダ・ヴィンチが1485年頃に構想設計=“design” し素描=“dessin”した (＝ディゼーニョ“disegno” した) 大英図書館の『アランデル手稿』中の一葉に線描されている戦車 (6-a) ––––但し、下の方の手漕ぎ四輪装甲戦車ではなくて、上の方の二頭立て騎馬曳き/押し回転大鎌付き二輪戦車––––に似ています。

　因みに、トリノ王立図書館の一葉 (6-b) の上の方には、これとは異なる形態の回転大鎌に足を切断されて転がっているバラバラ死体までもが線描されています。

　ところで、この調理器具の (付属品の刃と円盤の方ではなくて) 本体の方は、パレスティナ人女性美術家のモナ・ハトゥムが、2006年にブロンズ鋳造作品＜無題 (肉挽き器) “Untitled (meat grinder)”＞(7-a) にしていて、私の作品はそれに触発されて着想したものです。

　このような台所の調理器具を、多く家具大に拡大 (して実際に家具に見立てたりも) している彼女のこのシリーズ––––例えば、最近の拙稿でも触れた「おろし金 ( “Grater”)」(7-b) や、堅茹で卵 (“Hard Boiled Egg”) の＜輪切り/薄切り器 “Slicer”＞(7-c)  や、そして (これは家具大には拡大されていませんが) この＜肉挽き器 “meat grinder”＞––––は、観者が己れの身体をその器具で挽き/掻き削り／擦り卸し、輪切りにスライスし、挽き千切り/細切れミンチにする (感覚を視覚的・心理的に擬似体験する) 拷問器具へと変態して行くのです。

　ちょうど今日=11日までロンドンのバービカン・アート・ギャラリーで開催中の『遭遇 (/対戦)：モナ・ハトゥム × ジャコメッティ』展に寄せた展評の中で、イーナ・コールは、このハトゥムの＜肉挽き器＞と、ジャコメッティ初期のシュルレアリスム時代のサドの影響色濃いサディスティックな＜喉を切られた女 “Femme égorgée (Woman with her Throat Cut)”＞(8) とを「共鳴」させて、至当にも次のように指摘しています (これは私自身の思うところでもあります)。

　––––「(後者の) これでもかという程に切り裂かれ開かれ展げられた形体は、拷問器具を思わせる (前者と) 共鳴します。ハトゥムは母の台所にあったこの種の器具を忘れません。彼女は子どもの頃、それが恐ろしかった……円盤 (に開けられた無数の穴) から押し出されてくる挽かれた肉が、(食肉ではなくて) 人間や獣たちの生肉のように見えたからです。この二つの作品は形体的・心理的に共鳴はしていますが、ハトゥムは生々しいあからさまな暴力の表現は採りません。その代わりに、彼女の作品は観る者の心底に不安を生じさせ、彼ら自身が作品に参加協同するよう促すのです。観者は受け身の傍観者の役割を捨てて、何らかの形で、彼らが目撃する物体や人間と同じように欠陥を有した共犯者になるのです。」(9) ––––––––
