I've been vegetarian and mostly vegan since November of last year. now that I'm pregnant I find myself craving meat-- any ideas to fill those craving and still eat mindfully?
Hi there!
Cravings, in and outside of pregnancy, are likely to stem from instinctive factors such as nutritional deficits. If you do crave something in particular, take a look at your whole diet and your craving in specific, to see which nutrients you might be missing, and which nutrients are found in the items which you are craving.
For example if you feel like you want a steak, assess your overall iron and protein intake and maybe get bloodwork done to check your levels. If you crave cheese and the fake stuff isn’t cutting it, up your calcium intake and see if that helps. If you are craving empty calories such as sugary and fatty foods, check that you are taking in enough calories to support the pregnancy.
Nothing should compromise the health of your baby so if you are unsure about where you are at nutritionally, it is important to seek advice from a health professional. Just remember, pregnancy is a temporary state of being and just because you may crave something that isn’t vegan doesn’t make you any less of a vegan!
I've been having a lot of cravings for meat lately and it's been making me feel really bad 😕 I have been vegetarian for 6 months now and it's only been like this for the past 3 weeks but I'm really worried about it, is there anything you might suggest?
Most of us have gone through those periods. Don’t beat yourself up about it. I still have moments when I really want that pepperoni pizza or whatever, and I’ve been vegan almost 3 years.Recognize that you DIDN’T cave in and eat meat. Your morals and ideals won out. You can count on yourself to make the right decision. If you’re craving something in particular simply make a meat-free version of it using a meat replacement. Hopefully, that’ll get it out of your system. It gets easier, I promise!
I have been vegan for 3 months and vegi for over a year but lately I've really been craving a cheeseburger. I'm under a lot of stress personally and with finals this week, and I know I don't actually want to eat that cheeseburger but I want it in my mind. How do you deal with these cravings?
We have to identify why we are having those cravings! You mentioned you’re under lot of stress so maybe that’s the reason. Whenever you have a craving try to take conscience of that moment and analyze your emotions, do you want to eat due to emotions or is it really hunger? If you’re stressed or anxious this more likely will make you feel those cravings. So, work on that stress, try to find a way to clear your mind, even before to sleep! That’s how I deal with cravings, basically!
I have this problem. I really like the taste of meat. But after I eat it, I feel disgusting to the point of gagging. Just thinking about the animals. I've actually thrown up with guilt. How do I stop my cravings for meat?
Hey perlablanca ! I was a huge meat lover, and I’m a really picky eater, but I have managed to be strong and healthy with plant-based foods that I like, without having to force myself to eat stuff I don’t like. Everything starts with a change on our mindsets and open ourselves to try new dishes, recipes and food in general; with a positive attitude everything becomes easier.
Another thing you can try is to start “veganizing” your favorite recipes, a vegan must have been open to cook and try and fail in order to get the perfect combination of flavours, but to me, it;s the funniest part! Adventure yourself to try meat alternatives first and see how it goes!
"If my body is craving meat, it means I need protein!"
This is something a lot of people say just a few days after trying to cut meat out of their dietary habits, even though there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Studies suggest that our cravings are rooted in more psychological causes, and focusing on such psychological causes has been proven useful for reducing unwanted food cravings. It may also be the case that the individual is feeling stressed, anxious, or worried about this new dietary switch (based on all of the misinformation they may have heard about the "dangers" of vegetarianism and veganism) which can cause the individual to crave habitual foods - in short, your habit of eating animal products is making you crave them, not a biological signifier. Ever notice how you don't typically have cravings for foods that are healthy that you don't like the taste of? If you don't eat a lot of green vegetables, shouldn't you be craving broccoli?
Even if it were true that our body only craves what it needs (ignoring that the majority of food cravings are for things like french fries, cookies, doughnuts, and fried meats instead of lean turkey breasts on whole wheat pasta), this wouldn't be a legitimate incentive to consume animal products. You can get plenty of protein on a plant-based lifestyle, and if you're actually concerned about your health (and not just making up excuses to shove a burger in your face) hemp protein has been listed as one of the healthiest, with all essential amino acids, fiber, magnesium, and more.
Besides, "I'm craving it" is still not an argument. Some people crave dirt, poop, sand, rocks (pica). Some people crave some pretty gross things, and we don't think the craving justifies the consumption.
