Finding a topic for MEDIA220

This week, I selected a topic and initially determined the media format. Choosing a socially relevant topic wasn’t too difficult for me since I have a strong interest in geography and climate. As a result, I decided to focus on climate change, global warming, and the climate crisis.

For this topic, I realized that the primary goal is to raise awareness. Since I’m not skilled in video production, I opted for a static media format. Brochures and information visualization posters are my strengths, and for the hand-drawn illustrations and photography in these graphic designs, I plan to learn new techniques and consider collaborating with others.

As this project requires extensive data and information collection, I have already found some popular science websites. Next week, I will look for professional sources to gather more precise data.

Currently procrastinating by going through and looking at all of the discussion posts on the class website so that they’re all marked “read.”

My paper’s supposed to be 5-7 pages; the outline is currently about 3 (and it isn’t finished yet).  Hopefully, I won’t have to worry about length, at the very least.

You know what I would rather write a paper about?  The differences between media depictions of WWII and all the wars after it.

The problem with outlining for me is that I view outlines as one big giant note to myself, so I’m super, super informal in them.  And I don’t think that my professor will appreciate lines such as “also my dad was in the military so I should probably mention that” and “is this relevant?  Who knows.”

Paper prompt:

(1) The paper should be a reflection on your media consumption and its impact on your life. For example, do you see ways in which it shapes your identity? Your desires? Your aspirations, dreams, or goals? Your political consciousness?

(2) You are free to focus on specific content (e.g., a TV show), a given medium (e.g., the internet), or a theme within your consumption behavior (e.g., romantic comedies), but you cannot blend elements because you need to keep the paper focused. In short, you can’t simply ramble about all the different content you consume. Give the paper focus and develop the ideas within the given focus.

Potential paper topics:

1960s TV (might be too broad)

Media that takes place during WWII (Hogan’s Heroes, The Rat Patrol, The Great Escape, Colditz)

Media that centers around the military (Hogan’s Heroes, The Rat Patrol, The Great Escape, Colditz, M*A*S*H)

Spy-fi (The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, The Prisoner, The Avengers, Agent Carter, The Wild Wild West) (I don’t know if I can find enough to talk about in regards to how it relates to my life though) (also all of these shows are SUPER DIFFERENT even though Wikipedia puts them in the same genre)

I'm pretty sure my media paper has the most boring paper title I've thought of in years, but I don't have the energy to think of a new, more clever one

The problem with doing a paper based on social interaction on the internet is that it makes me want to come on here and test the theories!
