I'm not going to give a huge backstory or anything, but I've had my fair share of hardships, and never really had a support system. Reading whump and placing myself in those stories was my coping mechanism, but I always felt weirdly shameful about it. I kept thinking "This would never actually happen / It's selfish to want to be vulnerable IRL" and it soured my enjoyment eventually...
