this is by no means a proper critique, just some initial thoughts i might rehash later, but stumbling across some of the costume moodboards for twn and suddenly it becomes very apparent why the outfits from the show feel so all over the place. fantasy it might be, but there is still a lot of value in drawing inspiration from real, historical peoples / cultures / places to create visual distinction and identity. the abundance of asian/oriental & contemporary material feels wildly out of place for a slavic-based medieval fantasy,,,, ( the “ethnic inspiration” section being all asian in origin just rubs me the wrong way ) nothing is cohesive here ?? and the resulting costume design has obviously suffered from really strange choices in the art direction tbh, especially the runway fashion influences that made all of yennefer’s outfits stick out like a sore thumb ??? ( not gonna blame aslam here bc from seeing his work on black sails, you can see the difference in result when inspiration is rooted in distinct & defined historical, cultural & geographical sources ) idk it’s just all a mess 🤡
