President of UWM Asian Student Union Discusses Asian Hate Crimes

· Celina Xiong- the president of UWM’s Asian Student Union- is a first-generation Hmong-American who grew up speaking Hmong in her English-speaking school system

· 21-year-old posted a message of grievance in response to the spa shooting in Atlanta on March 31st.

· She has felt the intensity of Asian hate rise since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic last year. #stopasianhate was created to bring attention to the horrific rise in Asian hate crimes.

· She says that her Asian peers have felt the same shame and fear when going out in public since the Pandemic started.

· According to the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism, Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Surge 145%, while overall hate crime Drops 6% in 2020.

· Xiong also elaborated on her experience as a campus and community leader during her first year as the ASU President. "I feel a duty to help my community and I am the person who has to say something when something is going on".

College Students Face an Increase in Mental Health Concerns from COVID 19:

Students at UWM are feeling an increasing toll on their mental health as a result of an altered home and school lifestyles.

"A survey released by the National Institute of Health indicated a 71% increase of stress and anxiety in college students across the country due to the coronavirus outbreak. Similarly, an American College Health Association study found that the rates of depression have grown in students since the start of the pandemic. Both research studies found the primary concerns of students to be concentration on academic performance, social isolation, sleeping patterns, current events and personal safety, among others."

The UWM Student Union begins reconstruction from Fall 2022 to Spring 2023. The new Union Renovation project will implement improvements of "purchasing and rearranging new furniture to increase style and comfort to make student resources more accessible," says UWM Renovation.
