Employ These 2019 ICD-10-CM Updates into Your Ob-Gyn Reporting to Steer Clear of Denials Oct. 1

Ob-gyn practices across the country are now trying to get familiar with the latest updates to the 2019 ICD-10-CM code set.  Of the 470+ changes, 33 apply directly to ob-gyn — from lumps in the breast and multiple gestation pregnancies to uterine disorders and obstetric surgical wound infections.

Staying on top of the new and revised ICD-10 codes coming Oct. 1 should be a priority for your ob-gyn practice.

Keep reading for an overview of the most relevant changes in ICD-10 codes for ob-gyn:

New Codes for Multiple Gestation 030

If you code for multiple-gestation pregnancies, you’ll choose from over a dozen new codes that specify that the number of chorions and amnions equal the number of fetuses. These include:

O30.1 Triplet pregnancy

O30.13 Triplet pregnancy, trichorionic/triamniotic

O30.131 Triplet pregnancy, trichorionic/triamniotic, first trimester

O30.132 Triplet pregnancy, trichorionic/triamniotic, second trimester

O30.133 Triplet pregnancy, trichorionic/triamniotic, third trimester

O30.139 Triplet pregnancy, trichorionic/triamniotic, unspecified trimester

O30.2 Quadruplet pregnancy

O30.23 Quadruplet pregnancy, quadrachorionic/quadra-amniotic

O30.231 Quadruplet pregnancy, quadrachorionic/quadra-amniotic, first trimester

O30.232 Quadruplet pregnancy, quadrachorionic/quadra-amniotic, second trimester

New Z Code Options

Your ob-gyn practice also needs to make note of new Z codes for exams and screenings:

Z13.32 —  Encounter for screening for maternal depression

Z62.813 — Personal history of forced labor or sexual exploitation in childhood

Z91.42 —  Personal history of forced labor or sexual exploitation

Update Your Zika Coding

Zika diagnosis codes were added in a couple of different places in the 2019 ICD-10-CM code set:

P35.4 (Congenital     Zika virus disease)

Z20.821 (Contact     with and (suspected) exposure to Zika virus).

New Surgical Wound Infection Codes

You’ll also add more detail to your coding for obstetric surgical wound infections with new codes for:

O86.0 Infection of obstetric surgical wound

Excludes1: complications of procedures, not elsewhere classified (T81.4-)

postprocedural fever NOS (R50.82)

postprocedural retroperitoneal abscess (K68.11)

O86.00 Infection of obstetric surgical wound, unspecified

O86.01 Infection of obstetric surgical wound, superficial incisional site

Subcutaneous abscess following an obstetrical procedure

Stitch abscess following an obstetrical procedure

O86.02 Infection of obstetric surgical wound, deep incisional site

Intramuscular abscess following an obstetrical procedure

Sub-fascial abscess following a procedure

Use Additional code to identify the sepsis

Remember: In 2019, you’ll need an additional character for O86.0- that provides more detail about the wound site. If you do not add the additional character, the payer won’t accept the code.
