the song has nothing to do with this but enjoy. but PLEASE read. this has nothing to do with meaningless shit and has everything to do with surviving this world somehow someway and against all odds . it’s about living in light rather than in the dark and actually enjoying it..it’s about no longer hiding under the shield of “being young” . it’s fully accepting times up, man up.
over the last couple of years i’ve found myself checking my friends pulses more often than not. i’ve found myself staring down the barrel of sad relationship after abusive relationship after toxic relationship. but that’s how life is, and that’s what life does to you when you’re barely paying attention, and when you’re not on guard ready to save yourself.
i’ve been studying to be a nurse, which is the only thing i can and ever could imagine myself doing. the whole time i was in nursing school i was thinking about everything but nursing.
but after awhile you get tired of looking at yourself in the mirror just to see someone who doesn’t care staring back. at some point you just need to care, and at some point, you start to want to care.
in august 2019, my father was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and given 2-4 years. in september, he was given 1-2 years. by october we were praying for a year, and by november we were praying for spring. in december 2019, my father did not have to fight anymore. he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and subsequent stroke and moved onto bigger, more beautiful things that this life doesn’t get to experience. on december 6, he said goodbye. on december 9, i said goodbye. on december 10, we buried him, although his soul was gone with the stars long before that.
on december 17, i graduated college and became a nurse.
in late january, i heard the word “coronavirus” for the first time. tbh i thought it was a drinking game. i found out later it was the farthest thing from a game.
in march 2020, i entered the frontline. i learned fast that there is no room to screw up. i learned fast that everyday was gonna entail risking my life. i learned fast that life ends fast. faster than 4 months — faster than anything you’ll see in the modern medical world.
on april 23, i turned 24 years old. you know what i did that first hour of my 24th year? i zipped a body bag, and kissed the cold forehead of a woman i had known for a week flat. i watched as her sons and husband said goodbye to her, something that is considered a luxury in this moment in time. but damn, it didn’t look like luxury. it looked like the realest, saddest shit you’ll ever see. about 5 months earlier, that was me. i just never saw myself from that point of view.
5 months earlier, i begged my fathers nurses to stop filling his IV. what if he wanted to wake up? they said it didn’t matter, he was already leaving. 5 days ago, i became that very nurse.
but this family did not ask me to stop filling her IV. they asked me to not stop until she was pain free, and soaring through the sky the exact way she came in. just with a little more wisdom, a little more tired, she was done fighting a battle that never should’ve been hers.
i thought i was so strong in december. burying my father and somehow finishing school a week later. dadless. but in reality i knew absolutely nothing. not one thing.
now death is close, all the time. it’s as close as holding onto my fathers hand in december as sweat dripped down both of our arms, slowly losing its warmth, slowing turning into only my own sweat.
and i’m sick and tired of this shit becoming modern art. cancer takes us all. one way or another. this virus will take us all, one way or another. i have been in an environment day after day, rife with death and the stench of sweat drying out and going cold. and there’s not a damn thing you can do.
stay home. if not for you, then for all the people losing everything rn. i thought i did lose everything before this started, but i know now how easy it really IS to lose everything. i have not lost everything. i have lost a few things, my favorite things. people. places. you all have. and i’m sorry about that. i can’t tell you how inept, and ashamed i feel. everyday, knowing i can’t do anything but fill that IV. i fill it to stop the suffering , but this suffering is no where near its end.
stay home. bars suck anyway. there will be more concerts. or maybe, you’ll lose yourself and there will be nothing left. all i know is most of these things seem the same rn. but trust me, they aren’t. they just aren’t.
don’t be in such a rush. slow down. wash ur hands. i miss you daddy. i love you healthcare . i wish we never had to fill any of your IVs.
