Finally got a copy of the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery textbook illustrated by my friend and colleague @joshualklai and Written by Dr. Luis Tumialán @thieme.ny Josh worked on this book for years, producing hundreds of beautiful spine illustrations, but before making a single image, he created a representative average 3D spine model. This was accomplished by reconstructing several spine CT datasets and subsequently comparing and revising the models, referencing published data on surgically relevant dimensions of the spine. Having an “average” spine allowed guideline landmarks, measurements, and trajectories for minimally invasive surgery placed in 3D space to reliably show the target anatomy at depth and could serve as a useful reference for future illustrations (I use his amazing spine model all the time). Throwback: Check out this beautiful original airbrush painting from veteran medical illustration, Steven J. Harrison, PhD. It depicts cervical stabilization using a Haid plate and screws for posterior plating of the cervical spine.
