Behind the first door, we embark on a journey back in time to the era of the famous Hanseatic League. May I introduce you to the ‘Lisa von Lübeck’?

She is a detailed replica of a late medieval caravel and was fast and resilient. There were no templates. No corresponding wreck had ever been found in the mud or sand. Only illustrations on old coins, city seals and church paintings could serve as templates for her construction.

When there is enough wind, the three sails with a total area of 276 square metres are lowered to carry the ship across the seas. When there is no wind, the crew falls back on the 347 hp engine, which modern sailing ships and replicas also need in the event of an emergency in order to be able to react quickly.

Sometimes you just have bad luck. So the carvel Lisa von Lübeck (actually a cog but built in carvel technology) got stuck in the Außenweser (near Bremen, Northern Germany), at that time she had 45 people on board, 35 of whom were rescued by sea rescuers (DGzRS) and brought ashore, the crew of 10 remained on board and after she later broke loose again she could be brought to Bremerhaven accompanied by the sea rescuers and a ship from the Wasserstraßen und Schiffahrtsamt. Whether there was a navigational error or the stuck ship had another cause is still being investigated.
