The bird was such as you have heard. And divine Scripture testifies that it never flies except to frighten those in whom the Savior of the world wishes to spread fear. So much is it feared by all creatures that no other bird or beast will show itself when it flies; rather they flee before it as darkness does before the light of the sum. By nature only three of them can be together, for as the true Scripture says, they are born of the female without mating with the male. When they are ready to be born and hatch from the eggs, they are so cold that nothing could bear it except the mother. And even the mother cannot bear it entirely, for when she has endured it so much that she can no longer continue, she leaves the eggs and flies until she finds a kind of stone that is always in the valley called Ebron. This stone is by nature so hot that if anything rubs against it, it immediately catches fire. [...] Once the mother of the birds has found this stone, she rubs against it and strikes it with her beak until she feels it warm up. Even so this heat is not enough, for she seems to be very small to have suffered such great cold, so she rubs more and more until she feels the great heat, and then she takes flight and returns to her eggs. When she arrives, the fire has burned inside her body so that she can no longer do anything about it. Because she feels the great heat in her body, which she cannot cool down, she knows that the eggs will burn if she sits on them. Then she flies a little above the eggs, and the great heat emanating from her warms the eggs so that the birds inside hatch, which otherwise would have died of cold. When the mother is completely burned and turned to ashes, the birds gather around and are nourished by these ashes, which they eat until they have a little strength in their bodies and limbs. Once they have eaten the mother's ashes, they will never taste any other food. Then come forth the two males, who have become proud and so arrogant that neither can tolerate the other. Once they have reached their great strength, they are so full of pride that each of them wants to be lord over the third bird, which is female. Because of this there arises between them great hatred and a great melee so that they two males fight and kill each other. Only the female remains, who is called Serpilion; and the stone from which she burns is called Pirastite.

Having prepared the dough just as she had learned to do, she baked the bread and then broke it into tiny pieces on a white cloth. She went to the garden gate and then, once she had made sure that no one was watching, went up to the window and threw a third of the crumbled bread onto the floor of the prison cell. When the snakes caught the smell of the warm bread, they wanted it and flung themselves upon it so noisily that they could have been heard in the garden. In no time the bread was gone. Then she threw in the rest, and again they went after it; the bread was warm, and they therefore ate much of it, because poisonous snakes are of a very cold nature and are thoroughly cold.

Having eaten the bread, they were full. Then the warmth of the bread and the strength of the herbs acted against the snakes’ cold venom, and they all died so suddenly that not one could crawl away from the spot where they had fed.
