The island of Malta played a vital role in WWII - the Mediterranean was a theatre of war in which Britain was pitted against the Italians and Germans. The island was a crucial safe haven for allied supply convoys to Egypt and an airbase from which Britan could attack German and Italian convoys, which were supplying the Afrika Korps and the Italian army in North Africa. Malta received a George Cross for its valour during this extended campaign. It was the most heavily bombed place on earth at this time.(1942)
