Prompt Twenty Five: Meet Parents

”It’s only a formal dinner,” Aero reminded her the day before. “The green dress is fine.”

Only a formal dinner—Bris debated if the green dress would be fancy enough for candlelit dinner with her lover’s wealthy parents, and decided that adding the sterling silver jewelry set he’d gotten her for her birthday would elevate the silk-and-lace ensemble to something truly elegant.

Seirah did her hair in a complicated chignon and added a sparkle of silvery shadow to her eyes. Bris felt rather overdressed by the time the limo deposited her at the restaurant steps.

Aero, resplendent in a gold satin suit with diamond cuffs, led her into the glittering foyer on his arm and swept her into a booth curtained off at the back of the dining hall.

”Family booth,” he explained, as if the monogrammed name cards set up hadn’t given it away. “My parents will be here soon.”

“All right.” Bris folded her hands (she had forgotten gloves! They would see the scabs and scars!) in her lap and tried to calm the butterflies in her stomach. Aero’s parents were very decent people, she’d been told. Surely they would not object to their only son dating someone from the lower class.

Aero stood briefly to sweep open the curtain, and Bris looked up at the faces of her lover’s parents for the first time.

Mr Henri-Smith was tall, like his son, and had the distinctive silvery-white hair. He wore it just past his shoulders, braided and adorned with steel clips. His wife, slender and devastatingly elegant in a slim black dress with emerald embroidery, wore her brown hair in a bun adorned with a tiny diamond-studded cap. They both looked so refined, as if stepping from the pages of a fashion plate, that Bris caught her breath and inhaled the rich, heady aroma of the newest cologne and perfume on the market.

”Father, Mother.” Aero inclined his head respectfully. His parents greeted him with equal formality, which was odd and rather disconcerting. Then they turned their sharp gazes to Bris, who realized that all her combat training and field experience had not at all prepared her for meeting her lover’s parents. “My girlfriend, Bris,” Aero continued, completely unaware of the tension ratcheting through her body.

She stood, hands sweaty, and dropped a half-bow. “Bris Shields,” she said. “A pleasure to meet you.”

They studied her for a second, scrutinizing every inch of her presentation. She wondered if maybe a strapless dress would draw too much attention to how square her shoulders were, how thick her neck was.

Mrs Henri-Smith smiled first, displaying dazzling white teeth. “Likewise, my dear.” She had a low voice, like her son’s, and a similar dry cadence. “We’ve been looking forward to this night for quite some time.”

Mr Henri-Smith relaxed (Bris had not even noticed the tense set of his mouth until it was gone) and reached out to shake her hand. “We’ve heard so much about you. It’s a pleasure to finally see you in person.”

They knew about her of course—she’d seen the files Aero had compiled and sent to them—but it warmed her a little to know that they’d approved of her even on paper.

“Let’s eat,” Aero declared abruptly. “I’m starving.”

His parents, nonplussed by his breach of etiquette, deigned to slide into their side of their booth, and Bris noted with some delight that Mr. Henri-Smith helped his wife sit before taking his own seat just as Aero did with her. They had obviously taught their son by example.

Set after S04E21

Delenn had met John’s father exactly once, for a few minutes in the hallway of the Capitol. The older man had been kind to her, unhesitatingly accepting despite the bone crest in her hair marking her as a different species, but the meeting had been brief.

Now, though, she was about to meet his mother.

John’s hand was warm around hers as they walked up the sidewalk to the unassuming little house in Minneapolis where the Sheridans were staying. Above them, the sky stretched breathtakingly blue. It was a subtly different shade from the sky on Minbar, and the sun was brighter, warmer.

No wonder humans were such an exciting, volatile species, evolving on a vibrant world such as this.

“Don’t worry,” John said. “Mom’s gonna love you.”

Delenn looked up and smiled, squeezing his hand and trying to hide her apprehension. Humans had shown a wide variety of reactions to her, understandable due to her blended appearance, and there were still hard feelings left over from the Earth-Minbari war.

But John’s father had accepted her…

David Sheridan opened the front door as they stepped on the front porch, and greeted them with wide-open arms and a huge smile spreading from one side of his angular face to the other. “John! Delenn! Welcome home.”

John went straight into his father’s arms, and then it was Delenn’s turn to be on the receiving end of a hug.

“It is good to see you again, David,” she said warmly. John’s father was impossible to dislike.

And then a woman stood in the door, with such a striking resemblance to John that there was really no doubt in Delenn’s mind who she was.

Before anybody could say word, John bounded across the porch, sweeping his mother into a relieved embrace. When he finally set her back on her feet, he turned, gesturing. “Delenn, meet my mom, Nancy.”

Delenn bowed her head in greeting, but before she could even open her mouth, Nancy spoke.

“So this is the woman who has won my son’s heart.”

The words were formal, but the voice was warm, and when Delenn looked up, she saw John’s own smile on Nancy’s face.

“It is my honor to meet you,” Delenn replied, also formally, but with a smile of her own.

Nancy Sheridan reached out, taking her son’s elbow with one hand, and her soon-to-be daughter-in-law’s arm with the other. “Come inside, and let’s talk,” she said comfortably. “I can’t wait to get to know you better. David has said such nice things about you, and I love you already.”

John’s eyes met Delenn’s over his mother’s head as she bustled them into the house, and he grinned. “Told you so,” he mouthed wordlessly. “I knew she’d love you.”

These humans. These wild, wonderful humans, and their amazing capacity for love.

Delenn found herself smiling as she let herself be drawn inside.
