When I couldn't get the drs to listen to me about my stomach, I decided to research myself. I studied every disorder, disease and side effects. When I came across colonic inerti/mega colon, my heart stopped. I knew that's what I had, I just knew that this is exactly what I was going to be diagnosed with. I took the Article to my dr and he actually told me no, I would have a bigger stomach and be in more pain if colonic inertia was what I had. I took myself to another new GI dr and he did more tests and took me serious and diagnosed me. I felt this sense of relief and took the info knowing I need to teach others and learn myself everything about this condition. Since my heart is acting up I have been dealing with a new set of Drs that don't know about GI, it makes me proud to be able to explain and finally have that diagnosis. With my heart I am stressing, being in the same position of needing to research and relate to every disease, condition and illness I come across to get the right diagnosis and help the drs realize what is going on with me. Some days I swear I am smarter than some Drs. I looked at my chart today and a new group of words I had never heard came up. Autonomic dysfunction and autonomic nurvous system. Now I am hard core researching. I don't want to feel this anymore.
what is colonic inertia
Megacolon is an abnormal dilation of the colon (a part of the large intestine). The dilation is often accompanied by a paralysis of the peristaltic movements of the bowel. In more extreme cases, the feces consolidate into hard masses inside the colon, called fecalomas (literally, fecal tumor), which can require surgery to be removed. inertia /in·er·tia/] inactivity; inability to move spontaneously. colonic inertia weak muscular activity of the colon, leading to distention of the organ and constipation. Colonic inertia is referred to as a motility disorder; that is, it is an abnormal passage of waste through the digestive system. Motility disorders are very common, especially problems associated with constipation and diarrhea. Walk down any drug store aisle and you will eventually be presented with many over-the-counter medications to correct these problems. However, motility disorders may indicate a more complex problem. The function of the digestive tract may be impaired

"Megacolon means enlarged colon.
Genetic aganglionic megacolon in rats is a condition resulting from lack of, or failure of, the enteric ganglion cells to develop in the myenteric plexus of the rectosigmoid area of the large intestine (colon). The result is reduced, or complete lack of, peristaltic movement or defecation reflex in the large intestine, and the inability to move fecal material through the colon.
Acquired megacolon is any pathology that obstructs intestinal contents and prevents movement that results in extreme distention of the colon."
"Genetic megacolon occurs as a result of faulty neural crest cell development in the embryo stage. The defects in the neural crest-derived melanocytes, which cause white spotting, and the defects in the peripheral neurons, which result in the lack of ganglia in the digestive tract, occur on the same migration path.
Thus, you will often see genetic megacolon in BEW (black-eyed white), husky, blazed, split-capped, tei-colored, odd-eyed, and other “high white” lines of rats. The same relationship occurs in a certain type of Waardenburg syndrome in humans where there is either odd-eyes or a white patch of hair or pigment accompanying the digestive involvement. Lethal white foal syndrome in horses occurs in the overo types (white or mostly white) and causes death from megacolon within a few hours or days of birth."
This is why it is SO important to do research before even thinking about breeding your rats. One single mutation in their coding, one single marking, can mean the death for the new babies, and even the mother.
Tonight I learned that Elvis Presley had a mega colon that caused him chronic constipation. This helped kill him by aggravating his bad heart that can happen if you "bear down" too hard. The more you know.
