Her phone went off silently, the screen blinking to life from the corner across the room from where she sat. She hadn’t had the volume on the thing in what seemed like weeks, though she still had enough attachment to charge it every time it cried for power.
Her eyes flicked to the device, running through her head who it could have been. Her mother and grandmother didn’t call except for select days and... no, it couldn’t be. She can’t remember the last time she’d read a text from anyone (whether that was her fault or no, she didn’t want to think about).
Slowly she removed herself from the wooden chair, stepping gingerly away from the cluttered desk where she’d been staring at an unfinished painting of hers. Grabbing the phone, she lifted it tentatively, turning the screen back on as if she were afraid it’d break.
Van.
She had to double check--was it really him? There was no way in hell--
But it was. And she felt the signature jump of her heart even at the thought of him. Fingers panicked, she responded as quick as she could despite how bad she was sure she were shaking.

It was an action taken on a moment’s notice, and one that, after mere seconds of it occurring, she knew she regretted.
Her eyes widened–they’d been wet before, tears from seconds ago still cascading down her face, but now she blinked and found them dry. Xion knew within an instant that no matter how shocked her own action had made her feel, no matter how much remorse she felt, it wouldn’t change that she’d done it.
She’d hit him. Square across the face. And judging on the fact that her knuckles her swelling ever so slightly, she must have collided with bone on some level. Her fingers went numb–was that from the punch, or from her shock?–and she twitched them cautiously.
“Van, I–” She stopped herself. Hesitated. She didn’t know what to say to get herself out of this one, no matter how much she meant it. It was an unfamiliar feeling. “I’m so sorry I just– Fuck, I’m so sorry.”
The woman felt her knees start to get weak, wobbling ever so slightly as her heart continued to pound threateningly in her ears. She hadn’t punched anyone since high school. She hasn’t had any reason to, or any inclination. And certainly not a serious thought to punch him. Even her shoulders began to tremble. The adrenaline subsiding, the tears began to flow again.
“Please, God– I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to. I know that’s dumb because I did but I didn’t mean to hit you, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize I was going to, I didn’t realize I was there, please don’t be hurt or angry.”
