Trigger warnings: (temporary) character death
Summary: “A single word changes the past, saving Owen but costing Ianto his life. Reawakened by the glove, Ianto struggles to come to terms with his own death, while the team races to save Cardiff from the splintering timeline and the monsters it has unleashed. What must be sacrificed to salvage the future? And who is the cloaked figure just at the edge of Jack’s vision?”
My thoughts: If you ever wondered what would have happened if Ianto had died and not Owen after reading about RTD telling he initially thought about killing Ianto and bringing him back instead of Owen, that's the perfect fic. Not only is it intelligently plotted but it is also smartly written, with just the right amount of plot twists and suspense to keep you reading and interested. The character of Owen is brilliant in this fic, especially in the second half, and Ianto is perfect. The characters are in character and great, and Jack is one of the most heartbreaking character ever, as the author will remind us.
(I won't do that for every fic, just the long ones I just finished so I still have a fresh opinion in mind and the fic, but here's some random good points and less good ones)
The plot is hella interesting and researched. It stays canon by being a canon divergence, and that's what's clever.
If you like Doctor Who and the companions, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith and Jack Harkness in the same room will give you life.
A great small crossover and use of a monster that appeared in the Whoniverse, good reference. But even if you haven't watched SJA or DW, it's easy to understand.
Angst. It is tagged angst and it is damn good angst. It made me cry, which doesn't happen a lot to me but it was so good to cry for it.
The end is not as angsty as expected AND there is an alternate happy ending! Everything we love!!
The author will answer any question you have, with good justified explanations, so that's really good if you've still got questions or even disagree about something she wrote, because she can explain.
Tosh's character is brilliant but might... surprise you, in not a good way necessarily. It might seem a bit ooc but is well explained by the circumstances and the author on Ao3, so I personally loved it, but I'm not sure everyone would.
If you're not a native speaker, the medical jargon might be a bit too much sometimes. But the chapters/fic are long enough to make up for it. Don't try to understand exactly what they're talking about though, just understand a general meaning and it's enough.
You spoiled me SJA :( (That's not a real “bad” point, I’m kidding!)
