I painted this charcoal beetle (Melanopha consputa) right after painting the rain beetle - my two favorite beetles - one activated by fire, the other by rain. But today there is a new massive fire in California, the Camp Fire in Butte County. I had not expected the drawing to be so topical, but it isn’t a surprise in this late, hot fall weather with high winds coming up over night.
