i commissioned @skyblob to draw young kid thistle and baby yaad at bedtime. hehe… timeline wise it is impossible but yaad is better than delgal so I like it! thank you for this wonderful art :]

super fun how thistle initially framed his ultimate desire as a need to protect the entire kingdom and the welfare of its people but by the time we meet him it's all delgal delgal delgal and he shortly gets the full set of lion's teeth for it

despite everything Yaad still understood Thistle. he still wanted the best for his grunkle, unlike this fucking piece of shit Delgal - the person Thistle was attached the most and expected approval from. this is fucking me up

I find it really interesting how Yaad went from “Thistle is a lunatic that you need to kill to save everyone” to carrying him out of the collapsing dungeon on horseback and trying to feed him and hugging him and apologising for delgal and trying to give him closure… I think it’s because yaad witnessed a bunch of things when he was a doll, including the lion eating thistle, that made him realise thistle was a victim all along

yaad is referred to as a kid by izutsumi when she finds him in the doll. he also visibly looks quite young if you compare him to other tallmen such as kabru or mithrun with his rounder face and small size. he is 150cm which is the average size of a 15 year old boy. thistle is confirmed to be considered young enough to be considered a child by elves, so that means he stopped aging before reaching 80 (16). I did some maths before and calculated that thistle would likely be about 60-75 (12-15) and yaad would have to be like 10-13 for it to work though I feel like he is probably more like thistle’s age so 13-16 maybe since the maths don’t need to be exact I suppose

yaad and thistle learning about each other… yaad learning about thistle beyond him being a person that hurts people and learning about his family … thistle learning about yaad beyond yaad being an extension of delgal. their messed up entangled trauma and shared experiences of having to be an adult when you are not…

considering this is the standard canon has set for thistle splitting on someone - a total stranger he fully believed was a threat for most of the story, who outsmarted him and then held him captive (confirming that he is a threat even if he isn't malicious)... and all it took was a conversation and a meal, some "good advice" and then willingly freeing him for thistle to turn around and welcome him into his utopia? just like that?

it'll be fun to write his affections for his actual family members, is all i'm saying

absolute crying shame thistle didn't get to be included in those medieval-style opening/closing scenes besides the shadowy dark mage silhouette from before he was properly revealed to the audience WHERE IS HIS MURAL MOMENT
