I read someone somewhere on the dracula daily tag arguing that Jonathan is not actually that stupid, he is perfectly aware of all the weird shit going on and of his own likely impending doom, but he's too awkward and British to say anything and honestly? That tracks. I absolutely know British ppl who would stay in the murder castle because a) it's their First Real Job and they don't want to fuck it up and also b) because they're just too awkward and British to say anything

Other interesting parallels:

Throwing oneself to one's death via nature (cliff/ocean) as a means of escaping Dracula AND maintaining humanity. Although Johnathan sees it as an incarnation of god's mercy, whereas the Captain only sees it as proof of god's desertion.

Also re violence against Dracula - interesting that when Jonathan tries to smash ole' Dracky with a shovel, he does succeed in gashing open his head. When the first mate tries to do the same with the knife, however, he only stabs thin air. At what point can Dracula turn to mist/air? Can he only be harmed (if the shovel really did him any harm at all) when he's asleep?
