Pokemon Card of the Day #1806: Meloetta EX (Legendary Treasures)
The Legendary Treasures set came with a sub-set of 25 cards meant to look cute or pretty, meant simply to be there for collectors. Believe it or not, a few of those had at least a bit of interest to the player as well, a list that included Meloetta EX. Round decks were still considered a gimmick coming into the release of the set, but Meloetta EX brought the deck a couple of nice things. It brought a strong attacker as well as Round’s first Basic Pokemon. This made things run a good bit smoother compared to the deck’s previous reliance on exclusively evolved Pokemon. This cute Pokemon may have been more than just looks after all.
110 HP was really low for a Pokemon EX, which was quite a problem. There were plenty of decks that could find a way to reach 110 damage, so this made Meloetta EX very vulnerable despite being an import addition to its specific deck. The Psychic Weakness made life just a little easier on the likes of Mewtwo EX but was relatively low-impact due to the already low HP. At least it could retreat for an Energy if it did survive.
Brilliant Voice was pretty bad. 20 damage for 2 Colorless Energy just wasn’t enough. Sure, you got a coin flip that set Sleep on the Defending Pokemon if heads and Confusion if tails, but neither of those made the low damage worth it.
Round was about the same as it always was. You needed 3 Psychic Energy to use it, and you got 30 damage for each of your Pokemon with the Round attack. The goal here was to get as many Meloetta, Palpitoad, and Seismitoad in play as possible, as a full Bench of them added up to 180 damage. This was enough to KO a Pokemon EX, though it wasn’t easy to reach that number. The power here on a Basic Pokemon was why Meloetta EX was such a boost to this kind of deck, making it easier to pull off a tough scenario.
Round decks still weren’t at the top of the game by any means, but Meloetta EX helped make them a surprisingly decent option. It was something that would always have that chance to get big attacks off while also being very vulnerable to them itself. This meant that Meloetta EX was on the lower end of the competitive scene. It was likely better than the gimmick Round decks were considered in the past since getting a good result was much more likely with its addition.
