The vibe being that the scrappy Undercity girl somehow gets bunked with the prodigal heir to the Medarda fortune— academic rivalry mistaken for hatred, absolute refusal to sabotage each other's academic integrity (no shredding the other's notes while they're asleep, etc), and eventually, EVENTUALLY, when they're lonely at the top— they've won, they're matched, everyone else is miles behind them, there's nothing left to compete over— they finally realise that feeling they've been channeling into higher test scores and endless all nighters....
Well, it certainly wasn't loathing.
