All Membrane Separation processes are accompanied by a phenomenon known as 'concentration polarisation,' which occurs when the composition of the feed-membrane interface differs from the composition of the feed mixture in its entirety. This composition gradient is caused by the separation performed by the membrane and, as such, cannot be avoided.
However, it is critical to minimise the effects of concentration polarisation because the composition gradient reduces membrane separation performance and increases the potential for membrane fouling. As a result, one of the most important goals in designing and engineering membrane separation systems is to minimise concentration polarisation.
