In my work as a speaking coach, I get to meet the most incredible people. One of those people is Kim Campbell, widow of music legend Glen Campbell. Kim’s book Gentle On My Mind: In Sickness and In Health with Glen Campbell is a beautiful autobiography of their 34-year marriage and his very public battle with Alzheimers disease. Kim’s become an advocate for caregivers and I was so happy to be able to interview her for my upcoming Resilience Series. Last week Rachel Maddow opened her show with this, “Will you wake up on Election Day knowing that you have done EVERYTHING you could?” I have thought about that all week. I’m not going to list everything I’ve done, but I examined it and realized the one thing I haven’t was text a family member in a swing state and ask them to vote blue. It wasn’t an easy conversation, but I did it. My family heritage on both sides is German. I often wonder if we have relatives who were Nazis, or collaborators with Nazis, or “nice people” who didn’t want to get involved, who looked away, who thought it really couldn’t be that bad because it wasn’t affecting them. Germany is still reckoning with her past, but ALL THOSE PEOPLE are thought of as Nazis. That’s how serious this is. So I encourage all of us to do ALL that we can these last two weeks, whatever that looks like for you. I realized this week that these posts are my #morningpages. If you haven’t heard of that, it’s from @juliacameronlive’s work The Artist’s Way and The Right to Write. Making a daily practice of writing something, whatever is on your mind, without judging it editing it or having it have to “be” something in particular can be a powerful practice. But it’s just not something I have regularly done. But then a friend challenged me to use this space to talk more about myself and my life. I ended up in this canyon this morning. I took a different route than normal so I could drop something off at a neighbor’s. And in a few steps I was in this different world. Peaceful. Bird song. Trail crunching underneath my feet. It’s going to be another day under the “heat dome” which means some level of migraine (I’m on day 4, but doing okay). So I get up early to get at least one walk in, move my body, see the world a bit. Moving off my beaten path made a difference.
