Brown sugar...

It’s recess time for the Junior High School students. I decided to go outside of the teachers office and maybe greet a student or two. One of the 8th grade students was passing by and I said hi.

“Miss Wanda!” she replied excitedly, opened her arms to give a big hug. She was about 2 cm taller than me, which made me feel like a little sister instead. 

“Miss, I really like your smell, Miss! You smell like brown sugar!”

Well... that was... random? “And... that’s a good thing right?” I asked.

“Yeah!”

Now, every time I add some brown sugar in my cookies recipe, I can’t help but to think about that conversation and smile.

That one student...

The bell rang. It was recess time. This little student of mine came to me and told me stories while I pack my books to go back to the office. Was it about his day? Was it about his sister? Or is it his recent interest in gaming?

I’m not really sure, but it was a pleasant conversation. He seemed to love to talk a lot and I love to listen to his stories.

We walked together outside of class. He was still talking when I noticed, we passed the lunch shelf.

"Oh, where's your lunch?"

"It's there. I just want to talk to you until the hall (door) and then get my lunch."

How that flattered me. But letting him starve just because he wanted to talk to me was something I wouldn’t let happen. 

"Oh! I thought you were gonna get it outside. Go on, just get your lunch. I’m gonna get mine too and get back." I smiled.

He listened, and went back to class. 

This story marks one of the joy of when I was a homeroom teacher.
