Famine for God’s Word

One of our worship topics the other day was about memorizing scriptures b/c there will come a time when there will be famine in the land for God’s Word. 

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.”  Amos 8:11-12 KJV

So we chose Zechariah 12:10 as this session's memory verse.

Memorizing Scripture ... what's the point?

What is the point of memorizing Scripture?

The other day a friend of mine complemented me on my ability to quote some Scriptures. She went on to tell me that she felt insecure about her knowledge of the Bible and asked me how I "do it" - that is, how I memorize Scripture.

My immediate thought was, "Who the heck cares!?"

I quickly responded back to her by saying, "Our ultimate goal is not to memorize the Scriptures. Our ultimate goal is to do the Scriptures." In other words, our emphasis should not be on knowledge alone, but on practical application of the knowledge that we have received. I told her that she doesn't need to worry about "memorizing the Scriptures" because she was better than most at "doing the Scriptures."

If we obeyed half of what we know we would turn the world upside down!
