Season 1 - Episode 9: Our Ham Is Good
Ossuary
A poem by Meg Sorick
My memory castle is a ruin Its halls littered with debris My fingers brush the dusty walls And I strain in the gloom to see
The once bright panels and paintings Have mouldered and mildewed with time The shining pristine sculptures Are crumbled and coated with grime
Moonlight streams through rotted beams When I cast a glance above me For the roof has fallen inward And its…

Memory today
One of mine favorite memory techniques is the memory palace. With this method, you need two things, an existing place you can easily see inside of your mind and something, or many somethings to memorize. I suggest reading the book Memory Palace by Lewis Smile, in there he goes into more detail, but I will go through it quickly. An great example is when i memorize playing cards, for every one in the 52 cards I have an image, creature or person linked to it. When I see queen of hearts, I think of a girl I knew when younger, when I see ace of hearts, a goose with a old dutch school uniform and a heart drawn on his shirt shows up. The point is, the more ridiculous it looks, the better you will remember it. Let´s go for a stroll...
Waking up, I look at my pc and Jonny Bravo (10 of hearts) is sitting there chatting with some girl online. I look at him, complaining because he went on my pc without permission, when leaving the room, someone hits me with a Cue stick´s end. An old girlfriend who moved away, Lorry (Queen of hearts), was standing there playing billiard (The board is 5 of hearts) and at the other end I see myself playing with her (King if hearts). When going to the bathroom, i notice a goose (Ace of hearts) in the bath .Suddenly a Kraken (Ace of clubs) pulls him deeper and he disappears...
It is a small story, but it can go on much longer. In the book i previously mentioned, I got to learn all of shakespeare´s books chronologically. Trust me, this technique is good.
What made me think of posting this at the moment, was the fact that i was training and it made me think of old Greece. This method was invented there, and was named Method of Loci. But then you think, how was someone able to get to this method? I hardly can see someone coming up with it today. Of course not, we are way to busy. The society of today does not longer permit it for us to truly think. School asks us to memorize tons of things we will never use in life, neither in our professional lives. We are so occupied with our daily lives, when home, we only think of doing some mindless activities. But while we watch Tv, play videogames, have superficial conversations, surf the net, we waste even more of our lives. The average person in old Greece would be considered an intellectual today. We are getting dummer, because society is making us believe it is unnecessary to think more deeply about our life.
Therefore I propose the following, think about how you live. And promise yourself you will look out for mindless activities. Whenever surfing the web without meaning, whenever lost on social media just scrolling down and down... think of these words. My life is short, am I going to waste it by doing things I will not recall two days from now, or going to do something memorable... Going to better my memory (get more and more into my mind palace - next level of memory palace) going to study something (for now, japanese) I know will make a difference, doing something fun I will remember months from now (Persona 4 for me) or at last having a deep conversation with someone you enjoy talking to...
Sorry, but I can´t hold on to just one thing, so what I told you was a little more than just about memory. But I hope you enjoy it, and make use of it. Change yourself, or rather, become more. Make a difference to your life, and hopefully also to those around you.
