IT WAS a dreadful day outside, one particular day in the winter. It was awfully windy, the snow was falling tragically and covering the roads immensely, and it was awfully colder than usual.
Shawn had taken a liking to the idea of grabbing a cup at a local cafe he found recently. It was a small cafe on the outskirts of Toronto, which had found on a run one morning and told himself to visit one day.
He did. Today, he decided to come to the dainty cafe, Chrissy’s Coffee Co, on a corner, which was just across the road from a small park. He let a small smile take over his face at the sight of small children running around the park.
He’d always wished he had a partner to have kids with, share a home, maybe have a dog even. But, there was no way he’d be having that at the age he was now, because he’d be classified as “too young”. He still had “his entire life” to settle down and have kids, get married.
He still wanted it though, as badly as it made him sound desperate. He was almost desperate to have kids, because he’d wanted them for so long. He had nobody though. Nobody to share those same dreams with.
He was still single, as single as he could be. He couldn’t find somebody who took a liking so big to him, that he had about them. It sucked honestly. But he did have his eyes on someone in particular.
She was one of Teddy’s girlfriend’s, sorry, fiancé’s, friends. She also happened to know Josiah when they were doing photography in college, and had kept in touch with him for the years that he had been touring with Shawn.
She was a big fan of his work, despite the fact that she was a photographer as well. She was just as good as Josiah, if not, better. But there was no way he’d tell Josiah that.
It was Sunday morning, which meant Chrissy’s Coffee Co had a special for a cup of tea and any choice of a muffin for $4. It was Shawn’s favourite day to come in, because he loved muffins, more than anything in the world.
He had ordered his choice of tea and his muffin, and was sitting down scrolling through his phone. A picture of you had popped up on Instagram, one with you dressed up all nicely, smiling at the camera. It was cute, and it made him nervous just thinking about you.
I saw you on a Sunday in a café
And all you did was look my way
And my heart started to race
And my hands started to shake, yeah
I heard you asked about me through a friend
My adrenaline kicked in
'Cause I've been askin' 'bout you too
And now we're out here in this room
The door of the cafe opened, and a pair of girls around his age walked in. He took no notice of them, until the familiar smell of your perfume hit his nostrils. His eyes flickered up to the two girls, recognising one as you and the other as your friend.
His palms suddenly started getting sweaty at the thought of being in the same cafe with her. In this very room. He’d been in the same room with her before, but that was when all the boys were around. He was never around her with less than 10 people surrounding them.
He looked up at her, finding that she was wearing the same outfit she was wearing in her Instagram photo. They must have not long taken the photo. She looked over at him, the two of them catching eye sight, before she turned back to her friend.
His heartbeat quickened again, as he slowly gripped the cup in his hands more. It was to try and still the shakiness of his hands, because he was so nervous. His adrenaline kicked in when he remembered Josiah telling him that she had been asking about him, because all he could think about was what they could have possibly talked about.
It made him laugh though, because he’d asked Teddy about her too. He wanted to get to know her more, but he was too shy to even speak to her the first time they met. The boys noticed how hesitant he was around you, but they kept it to themselves and didn’t tell you.
I get a little bit nervous around you
Get a little bit stressed out when I think about you
Get a little excited
Baby, when I think about you, yeah
Talk a little too much around you (I talk a little too much, yeah)
Get a little self-conscious (I get a little self-conscious)
When I think about you
Get a little excited (I get a little excited)
Baby, when I think about you
Yeah, when I think about you, babe
But when the boys told him he talked a little too much to her, he started getting self conscious. He didn’t realise that he was talking so much, and when he told you what they said, you told him you didn’t mind listening to him.
But once they’d opened up to one another a bit more, Shawn slowly started hatching out of his shell. He’d started talking more, to the point of the boys realising that he spoke just a little too much around you. But you didn’t mind, you liked listening to him speak. He was so passionate about what he does, it was cute.
We walked in the rain
A couple blocks to your apartment
You told me to come inside
Caught me staring in your eyes
And I'm not usually like this
But I like what you're doing to me
Ah, what you're doing to me
That was the day you opened up more to one another, a bit more than what you had expected, but it happened. You slowly learnt more things about one another, and you both loved it. Shawn was glad the boys weren’t the only ones that connected to him, but you, you connected to him on another level.
Shawn had learnt so much about you, from you favourite book, your favourite movie, your favourite YouTuber, favourite actors/actresses, favourite TV series, even your favourite colour and your dream job.
He’d learnt so much about you in such a short amount of time, that it had him thinking what it’d be like to spend the rest of his life with you. He couldn’t imagine having kids with anyone else in that moment, and he wished you felt the same way.
That day, you guys had spent so much time talking, that everyone had left, and it was suddenly just the two of you in the room. You had realised the time, and told Shawn it’d be best if you left because you had school the next day.
Shawn then insisted on walking you home, despite the fact that it was at least three blocks, and it was pouring down rain. He didn’t have his car, because it was at the mechanics getting repaired, so he couldn’t even offer to drive you home.
You walked the couple blocks home in the rain, the two of you talking even more immensely than you already had. Now it was your turn to learn more about Shawn. Once you had reached your apartment, you insisted on inviting him in because you didn’t want him walking home in the rain again. You didn’t want him to get sick.
You had spent a few hours talking, but not before giving Shawn some spare clothes you had in your drawers, because his clothes were wet. They were old clothes your dad had bought for you, that were too big, so you usually wore them as nighties. It made him nervous, wearing your clothes, because they smelt exactly like you. He never wanted to take them off.
You’d thrown his clothes in the dryer, while you both sat on the couch to keep talking. Shawn was sitting down, admiring your apartment, while you went into the kitchen. She came back with a hot choclate, and a bowl of marshmallows.
And before you know it, the two of you were talking again, for another few hours. You had completely forgotten about school the next day, but you didn’t really care either way. You had been watching the TV for a while, but Shawn couldn’t concentrate on anything but you.
He was staring at you, and you had caught him in the act. It’d only made him blush harder because you had caught him, but it also made you blush. It was the moment Shawn realised that maybe he wasn’t the only one who had feelings, maybe you were just as nervous around him as he was around you.
He would never admit it though. The boys had attacked him with so many questions about you, because they all knew. Shawn had never been so infuriated with somebody before, especially not a girl.
He hadn’t had much luck with dating. Most of the girls just liked him for his looks, or his money. But he hoped you weren’t like those other girls, he knew you weren’t like those other girls. He’d already found out how different you were, and he wasn’t even scared of being nervous around you anymore. You were the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
