WIP: On the Edge of Hope… Obi-wan ventures into town with Korkie, Luke, and his mother…
Some of the ladies were barely older than Korkie. More than one had dissolved into giggles when he politely greeted them. Others were roughly Padmé's age. One or two were closer to his own age, unable to keep the cynical undertone off their expressions. He treated them all with the same slightly aloof, but graciously polite air he'd used while on diplomatic assignments with the Jedi.
The latest one glided away, and Obi-wan sank into his chair. He felt like one of those ridiculous children’s toys, constantly popping up and down as yet another pushy mother dangled her daughter in front of his nose. He hailed the arrival of Korkie with relief and immense gratitude.
Korkie handed him another cup and plopped gracelessly into the chair next to Obi-wan. 'Do not even think about moving from that chair,' Obi-wan hissed.
'Why?'
'I seem to have attracted a veritable parade of unmarried women.' Obi-wan buried his nose in the cup to hide the rosy pink stain just visible over the edge of his beard.
Korkie hooted with laughter. 'You're a reasonably good-looking unmarried man, who stands to inherit a prosperous vineyard, or at least a stake in a prosperous vineyard. On top of that, you're obviously a heartbroken widower, who needs cheering up.'
Obi-wan snorted, eyeing a voluptuous young woman, wearing a dress with a plunging neckline. If she leaned over, he reckoned her breasts would simply slip from the flimsy fabric that just barely held them in. 'So someone like her —' he gestured in the general vicinity of the woman, 'is supposed to cheer me up?'
The woman caught Korkie's eye and she smiled at him, subtly shifting toward him. 'At least her… charms might.'
'Don't be crass,' Obi-wan murmured. 'Your mother wouldn't like it.'
‘Just stating facts, buir.' Korkie chuckled and leaned back in the chair. 'And the fact that you have two strong, healthy sons is a testament to your virility.' He downed the rest of his drink and set the cup on the grass. 'A single man with a decent fortune, and motherless sons is clearly in want of a wife.'
'So I'm nothing more than a prized Bantha bull in this scenario?' Obi-wan slouched further into the chair, scanning the crowd in vain for his mother, so he could insist they go home. Immediately.
'Got it in one.'
