okay i actually thought about it really hard and there is one (1) romantasy scene in rote. and it’s the scene in royal assassin where fitz is tending to the fool and basically word for word says “who did this to you” lmao. like that’s a Trope i’ll give it that

i have now read several rote high school aus (beloved mutual’s fault) and i have concluded they are kind of the perfect rote fanfiction. they fulfil the missing element, which is low stakes dumb shenanigans, but also fitz is just the perfect teenage narrator bc he’s so charmingly stupid. i also really like watching the author do complex contortion to explain why beloved is Like That and/or give them their iconic nickname
i wish i lived in rote so a big huge beautiful dragon could come along and solve many of the world’s problems but not actually help me specifically at all and then i could die horribly offscreen or maybe even get a whole sentence about it. perhaps assigning me a passing resemblance to someone’s kid or something, because i’m short, and owing to the Themes. but instead i am employed and i have to drive a car
one of my biggest pet peeves with romantasy is how often they’ll be like “he is the notorious court assassin… she’s famous for being the assassin… the world’s most famous assassin!!!”. being an assassin is a job that nobody should know about. in fact if everyone knows you’re an assassin it makes you much worse at that job. my close personal friend who is also my mortal enemy chade fallstar would never let this happen
