A double feature this time. Refs for Centaru and Jinnel, the grandparents of Beryl and Amethyst, two important characters in Merdack. They haven’t changed all that much from their first appearances. Centaru was a minor noble and a war hero, Jinnel was from a more influential family but chose a simple life by Centaru’s side, and they were very much in love until Jinnel’s untimely death. More members of this family coming up.
Seicher’s mother isn’t really a character but whatever, I designed her anyway. I basically reverse-engineered her design from Seicher. Based on that I thought she should be kinda small with medium-length bluish fur with small, black markings, and with brown eyes. I ended up doing amber/yellow instead of brown but these are my characters and reality can be whatever I want. I think I’ll call her Risha.
Figured I should give Seicher’s father a redesign, too. He doesn’t really appear in the comic except in flashbacks, but it’s good to have a ref anyway. He used to be like a red Seicher clone but I wanted to, you know, not do that this time. I was also trying to get some more of that long-legged southern wolf physique in there. His name is Logice and he’s a famous architect. If you’re asking how or why this wolf is an architect, just don’t. The wolves basically people, I just like drawing dogs.
Continuing from Seicher before, here’s Andeira, the mother of one of the main characters in Merdack. I’ve drawn her before but I realised that in both pictures she’s very tall and slender, when she’s supposed to be a pure-blooded mountain wolf, i.e. stocky and fluffy. I also updated her markings a bit while I was at it.
New ref for Seicher, an old character from my comic, Merdack. He hasn’t changed much, I basically just made his eyes brown instead of blue and added the subtle gradient on his legs. At one point I think I tried to make his stripes more tiger-like, but I think I prefer the original “three thin stripes” design he has here.
Drew this a couple of weeks ago to showcase the new designs for these characters from my comic, Merdack. The characters are Kage, Hiro and Rigen, and their father Argon floating in the background.
I made the base colors with Derwent Pastel pencils, and the end result looked a bit like a coloring page. I thought it was funny.
The drawing is loosely based on this cover page for the fifth chapter of Merdack’s original version. This is from late 2006 or early 2007, I think. The title says “Sons of Argon.” I thought these old character designs looked kind of bland, and it made no sense to me that none of them looked like their father, since Argon already had the blue mane and eye markings.
And here’s the “character sheet” I made to test out the new designs. Hiro (yellow/cream one) is only supposed to have the eye marking on the right side, opposite from the leg marking, so the small full-body shot is wrong. I also ended up giving Kage (black) shorter white “socks” on the back legs, which is also not shown here. And that’s all I have to say about this drawing.
Unexpectedly came across this old style test for my comic. I didn’t remember making this, but it’s kind of cool so here we go.
Some concept art for parents of Merdack characters.
In the top picture are Merdack and his siblings’ parents, Halter and Mirian. They had a difficult relationship because Halter had bigger things in his mind than just being a husband and father.
In the middle picture we have Beryl and Amethyst’s parents, Uniwe and Dar-An, and Uniwe’s father Centaru. Centaru was a war hero and the head of large pack of midland wolves in Roan, but he was a very demanding and angry father. When Uniwe fell in love with Dar-An, a penniless and lowborn southern wolf, Centaru didn’t accept the relationship, so Uniwe and Dar-An eloped. However, they were very poor and knew that legally their children were the heirs to Centaru’s lands and pack, so they sent young Beryl and Amethyst to live with Centaru. Centaru did confirm Beryl as his heir, but he wasn’t a very good parental figure for them either.
Finally there’s Fenris’s parents, Andeira and William. Their marriage was political, but they’ve grown to love and respect each other a lot. Also Andeira is actually really huge compared to William because she’s a mountain wolf and they’re all ginormous.
