Happy MerMay 2026! This time my two head to the stars, dancing through space as Merdragons, very much inspired by Neon Odyssey, and the story I may write for this next lifetime they will share.

From Under The Lake - Hijack Mermay Oneshot

Hiccup had been told countless times to stay away from humans. Humans and merdragons were at war, with each species invading the other's territory to try and chase them away or wipe them out. Hiccup, not only being the prince and only heir, but also a runt, had been forbidden from helping in the war. He had never even seen a live human.

At least, not until today.

He had wandered far from home and into a cave that led to a lake right on the edge of a human village. It was winter, so a layer of water at the top was frozen solid. Hiccup slowly approached the surface, wanting to get a closer look at the two silhouettes above the ice. He stopped when he heard the ice begin to break. The thin ice cracked around the two humans on the lake, threatening to drop them into the freezing water. Backing away, he watched as one of them suddenly flew across the lake, while the other landed right where the first had been. Just a few short seconds later, the ice shattered, and the human fell in.

Hiccup swam up to him as the other one's voice rang through the water. The human had short brown hair and pale skin, and as he looked up towards Hiccup, his amber eyes narrowed in confusion. Hiccup couldn’t help but stare into those eyes. The pupils were perfectly round, and didn’t narrow into slits like merdragon eyes. He had no horns, and only two thin fins on the sides of his head. No scales dotted his skin, only the faintest of freckles. When Hiccup gently dragged the talons on his hand across the human’s cheek, the skin underneath was smooth.

Then his eyes closed, and Hiccup remembered that humans can’t breathe underwater. He wrapped his arms around the human's torso, and quickly swam up to the hole in the ice. Reaching the surface, the merdragon quickly climbed onto the ice and wrapped his wings around the human, holding him close to keep him as warm as possible. Hearing a noise of surprise, Hiccup looked up to see a human woman who looked similar to the one he was holding. She cautiously approached the merdragon, reaching out to them. Hiccup tightened his hold on the human, growling protectively, and the woman hesitated.

“Please-” she said- “my son, he needs help.” After a short moment, Hiccup decided to trust her, and carefully handed the human over. Then, the human coughed up some water, wheezing as he tried to catch his breath. He was alive. “Hurry” Hiccup warned, and before the woman could even look at him he was back under the water, swimming away as fast as he could. Some part of him hoped the human would survive, so they could meet again.

started drawing this at 1 am, finished at 3 am woop woop (made edits in the next morning), it's a quick three-ish hours doodle that helped me get out of an art block.

Finished illustration commission for Nenekiri! Featuring him as a mer-dragon finding some shiny treasure at the bottom of the ocean! This illustration was meant to serve as a badge for a future con, so I worked in a nice frame with his name on it as well ;)
