shonda messed up a lot of things characterization wise but i think it's a great thing she made mer not a neurosurgeon. i think it's brilliant. i'm sad cause we don't get fluff scenes with them doing surgery together anymore, but i think it's brilliant because when derek pitched the trial to richard and when mer did her solo surgery a psuedoattending, he said how amazing he thought mer was. (c)

(c) how she didn’t only look like her mother, that she was just as smart and awesome as her mother. but then derek lost his hand. he lost his hand and couldn’t do surgery. if mer was a neurosurgeon attending, would he have tried so many times to go back to surgery? yes, he loves surgery. yes, he loves being a surgeon. but the thing mer told him to convince him to try to fix his hand again was that he was the only one who could help those cases. but if mer was a neurosurgeon, he wouldn’t have to.

That’s very true but I do believe that Shonda did a very good job with Meredith’s characterization. You should definitely read sydney’s recent post about it because it is freaking amazing and completely spot on.

exactly. it's not all about the ratings....deviating from core storylines and shitty writing violates the whole integrity of the show we have all come to know and love.

the president of abc i believe (or some higher up) said in an interview that he spoke with shonda and she would like grey's to continue for several more years even if the core cast leaves (which most of their contracts expire at the end of this year)
