LOUD obnoxious telephone ringing, the clacking of shoes hitting linoleum, papers rustling, printers going haywire and chattering all around. Ryuji’s brow twitched in annoyance, his leg bouncing faster as he sat in an uncomfortable plastic chair that had no right being this small. He shifted from side to side, his bulky body weight making the joke of a chair holding him up creak in distress. He noticed a few cops giving him a nervous look, which he quickly shut down with a glare. What a bunch of wimps, he thought bitterly.
He glanced down at the cold metal handcuffs currently locked around his wrists. He cussed under his breath as he felt them starting to chafe his wrists, angry marks starting to bloom on his skin. Small ass chair, small ass handcuffs, this place was hell. Aggravated assault, huh? Ryuji couldn’t even call what had transpired at the bar earlier that night an “assault.” The shrimp that had tried to one up him was even smaller than Ryuji was when he was in grade school. Skinny arms, crooked nose, he was sweating bullets once Ryuji had stood up to his full height from his seat at the bar counter. He help but smirk at the memory.
He sighed though, moving his wrists to try and alleviate some of the discomfort. Punk had called the cops as soon as Ryuji was about to shove him away, what a pain. He knew he couldn’t have caused anymore trouble. He would usually be able to get away with whatever he wanted, but the damn old man seemed hellbent on being more restrictive than usual, hence his current predicament; sitting in a damn police department with no cop in sight to let him go.
He glanced over at the police officer who was sitting the closest to his chair, whistling to get their attention.
❝ Oi, boy in blue. When am I gonna be let outta here, huh? Been sitting here fer almost an hour already, ❞ he sneered, ❝ Who the hell is in charge ‘round here anyways?! ❞

Did he just have to be so unpleasant? People like him, though honest to a fault, were so hard to understand. At least, when it came to trying to read them, it all got surprisingly hard. Maybe, being so clear blinded his eyesight. He let out a soft groan, showing a fleeting grimace before crossing his own fingers against themselves.
“Cats, huh? Yeah, seems like they could keep Ayabe busy. Those are good news.” Kuroiwa commented, that was the plan, if he really had sent cats towards the station. But, assuming Yagami was just being… Yagami, he probably was just making fun of him. He had to just count to ten, mentally… No need to get angered so quickly.
He cursed Yagami’s innate ability to just make his head explode, but he’d keep a neutral expression outside. He couldn’t even find the strength to tell him that searching for cats hardly counted as a case, he probably knew that, anyway. Kuroiwa eyed the bartender as he served another one and then turned his head to the other side.
“It’s actually not that bad a place.” he whispered to himself. A bit cramped, sure, but places like that were quite nice, for some reason. Maybe it reminded him of his office or something. He turned his head back at the drinker. “You’re practically everywhere, but you seem to frequent this place. Though not alone, if I recall. Is Kaito-san lost?”
The police station was an airless place. The smell of shoe shine and hair gel radiated off most of the staff there. He had only recalled a couple of people who actually gave him the time of day whenever he would drop by there when he still was a lawyer. Going there nowadays just felt like a deathwish. Livening up the place for Ayabe and Mafuyu with stray cats seemed like just the perfect plan. If only I wasn't just joking, he internally chuckled.
❝ What can I say, it’s got a good atmosphere. The drinks aren’t half bad either, ❞ he shot a small smirk at Masuda, receiving a simple shake of the head in response. Yagami would see the small smile on his face though. ❝ My detective, now you’re looking for Kaito-san too? Maybe you really did come here hoping to see us, ❞ he placed a hand mockingly on his chest, as if he were a fair maiden, ❝ I’m honestly touched. ❞
He tapped the side of his glass, his fingers getting wet from the condensation. ❝ I know you think we’re attached to the hip, but even he has his own things to do from time to time, ❞ he looked over at Kuroiwa, a glint in his eye, ❝ Unlike some people, I’m not monitoring my partners 24/7. ❞
Ayabe had always had an eye over his shoulder, especially with someone like Kuroiwa as your coworker. After understanding how Kuroiwa actually functioned and worked, Yagami was even more impressed that Ayabe was still a cop at this point. Though, even as good of a detective Yagami was, there was always something about Kuroiwa that evaded him. He wasn’t sure even he wanted to know what lied behind that cold expression.

He could hide the twinge of a smirk well—bleak, but understanding. Yakuza, politicians… police. It was the same. There’s a desire there, that didn’t perpetrate the honest and virtuous facade shown out to the rest of the world.
Ties to Tokyo’s underworld, that no one unknowing would truly look for behind the facade of an uptown office building. Kuroiwa knew. 『 Are you dissatisfied? 』 Mine himself was, still and even now. He wanted to hear it here, too.

“𝙸sn’t that something?” Actually, the very question makes him feel a little dizzy from more than beer, makes his throat feel tight. He slips a finger under his shirt collar to make his tie even looser than it is. Otherwise he’d have some slick, confident thing to say but York isn’t master enough over his tongue to have such an answer roll off easily.
“I’ve never been the best swimmer, you see... And I haven’t been in more than waist-deep water since middle school, talk about deep and dark.” He rambles anyway, but in a different sense than usual, strangely more thoughtful. There’s something else, even further down York gathers in his subconscious, but like hell’s he gonna dive there. Not figuratively, much less literally. “You know, we still have no idea what’s sitting that deep in the ocean. I wouldn’t like to find out, either.”
@meretricious-knave [said] ❛ What are you, trying to give me a heart attack? ❜ [concerned sentence prompts, accepting !]
“𝙷m?” York has to say, he feels just at home even though it’s a stuffy little place. Cigarette smoke wafts into the air and mixes with the smell of grilled meat, he’s had a beer or two. He stops, leaning out of that atmosphere and over a bowl of rice drowning in soy sauce.
The near finished cigarette stays sticking out between York’s lips, all still for a moment, before he takes it back between two fingers and grinds it. After faint surprise, that sly and passionate spark comes right back into his eyes. Yeah, he’s always got a story to tell. “No, I’m not kidding.”
@meretricious-knave [said] [ 📞 ] ‘ you’re lying. ’ [phone call prompts, accepting !]
[“𝙸’m not.”] While York is sure about having called up the right place, he doesn’t know what to make of the answer on the other end. [“This is Metropolitan Organized Crime, correct? I’m being expected.”] He doesn’t match his tongue and temper to the foreign phone line. Being stranded at the airport is one thing, in a foreign country another.

SLEEP HEADCANON
Yagami always changes positions when he’s sleeping. It doesn’t help though that the only place for him to sleep is either in his desk chair or on the couch in the office. Kaito-san is constantly telling him to buy a bed or a place with a bigger space, or even move in with him. But Yagami is dogged and always refuses, even though he constantly complains about his back feeling completely wrecked whenever he wakes up.
People usually assume his calm demeanor is just his personality, and while that is part of it, it’s also because Yagami is sleep deprived most of the time.
