“Whose dog is that?”
“I’m gonna need you to calm down.”
“Power’s out on the whole block.”
“So… why do you keep your closet locked?”
“This day can’t end any faster.”
“You have the cutest nose.”
“Looks like you have a secret admirer.”
“Do you love him/her more?”
“Please, stop it.”
“You can’t go in there!”
“Oh, just shut up already.”
“You know what? I don’t care!”
“There’s a huge-ass spider on the ceiling.”
“You believe me, don’t you?”
“The hot water’s not working.”
“You’re scared of me… aren’t you?”
“Morning, sleepyhead. I made coffee.”
“You love me, don’t you?”
“You didn’t tell me you had a dog!”
“There’s a storm rolling in. You scared?”
“Don’t do that.”
“Just get out of here.”
“I can’t stop thinking about you.”
“I made cookies… want some?”
“You’re an asshole.”
“Don’t give up on us. Please.”
“It’s too cold to go outside.”
“You got a death wish?”
“I know you know.”
“I just wanna be your friend.”
“Stop yelling at me!”
“That’s it. I’m calling the police.”
“I didn’t know you smoked.”
“I thought you said there’d be alcohol.”
“You’re the only one I want.”
“I wish I never met you.”
“You can’t just keep pretending things are fine!”
“Guess who bought silly string!?”
“Did you steal that?”
“Can I buy you a coffee?”
“Let me make it up to you.”
“Stop talking. Now.”
“I don’t think we can be friends anymore.”

“So it’s someone not yet looked at. A missing connection,” Ryoji murmured thoughtfully as he absently fiddled with one of the ends of his yellow scarf, a small frown tugging on his lips. He wouldn’t really know where to direct his thoughts since he’d never seen the full case file due to his choice of not following York to his workplace. Blue eyes glanced towards the clock and he blinked in surprise at the hour. Time could sometimes pass incredibly fast for him, so while he didn’t need any sleep that didn’t mean that York could afford to miss sleep.
“You should get ready for bed, York-san. It’s gotten quite late and even if you can’t fall asleep at least you’ll be able to rest your body. The morning will likely see you going off to find the missing connection to uncover the culprit.” He gave the agent a look that looked somewhere between parental and a little scolding.
“Mh-m.” With decided emphasis on the latter syllable, York didn’t seem all too disappointed at the prospect after all, that this wasn’t a mystery he’d solve tonight. He lit yet another smoke like he didn’t even think about it, the one in the ashtray had only just gone cold. In some part he went on to agree with Royji’s conclusion, “I have a feeling I’ll find him soon.
“Don’t you, too, Zach?”
That look, however, York seemed to go straight past. “Not so fast though, I’ll finish my coffee first.” A glance spent up at the plain clock hung up on the wall across from the bed. With the realization gathered from that, he looked back at the youth. “That’s a shame. I get to turn in early, but there’s still no time for a movie.”
@meretricious-knave [said] 🍻 + “ what is your deepest, darkest fear ?” [drunken confessions, accepting !]
“𝙸sn’t that something?” Actually, the very question makes him feel a little dizzy from more than beer, makes his throat feel tight. He slips a finger under his shirt collar to make his tie even looser than it is. Otherwise he’d have some slick, confident thing to say but York isn’t master enough over his tongue to have such an answer roll off easily.
“I’ve never been the best swimmer, you see... And I haven’t been in more than waist-deep water since middle school, talk about deep and dark.” He rambles anyway, but in a different sense than usual, strangely more thoughtful. There’s something else, even further down York gathers in his subconscious, but like hell’s he gonna dive there. Not figuratively, much less literally. “You know, we still have no idea what’s sitting that deep in the ocean. I wouldn’t like to find out, either.”

“𝙸t sounds like a movie plot, doesn’t it?” And he seemed thrilled about that at the end of his retelling; in a professionally subdued manner. Well, it teetered delicately on that very tone. “The perp put all his methods and victims into his writing. Thousands of people read it and had no idea.
“We set fiction apart from reality, but sometimes they do happen to touch too close for comfort.”

“𝚃here’s a severe misconception about the worship of the goddess Kali in the western world. It’s actually rooted in Indian folklore.” York explained, finally coming back from one of the many tangents he crossed and crossed from. What’d even made that piece of trivia relevant to the conversation lay a few sentences back. “I’m not a religious man, so I’ve got to admit that I had some trouble putting myself in those shoes.
“After all it’s just crazy to me. Being religious is one thing and ritual murder’s quite another.”

〚 ❣ 〛 His answer confuses just as much as it intrigues her. He can’t tell her much about how he got here? How he found them? Maybe he knows more than he’s letting on, or maybe he’s stringing her along to get answers from her. About what, she doesn’t know. She hasn’t heard or read anything in the vast amounts of files left behind by Trench and Darling about anyone named Francis York Morgan, or many connections with the FBI. But if he’s here…
“Okay, York,” she says, her smile growing just slightly. She’s grateful for names rather than titles; she still hasn’t entirely gotten over her distaste at being referred to constantly as Director Faden, insisting people call her Jesse. But when a higher up shows up, maybe it’s natural to want to use formalities instead. She doesn’t know, she’s been living as a rogue for something like seventeen years until finding her way to the FBC. She doesn’t know much about authority, doesn’t like being called director, doesn’t think she’ll ever willingly get used to it.
“What’s the nature of these questions?” It’s with a moment of pride that she thinks she sounds like she actually knows what she’s doing here, like she carries any sort of weight. In truth, she’s still learning so much, but as Director, she doesn’t really want to show that. Especially to a stranger. For now, it’s business first. She won’t let him deeper into the building until she has a good reason, and even then, it would probably be in one of the lower floor conference rooms where minimal Altered Events happen. “I’m sure you understand that a lot of things are classified, even between Federal branches.”
𝙰 smile from York, too, even if he’d just as well keep talking as ‘Agent Morgan’; there’s reason he offers it. He likes it better, and he can appreciate it if someone else has got the same idea. More similarities despite differences. “Of course, I’m sure you’ll also have some questions that I won’t be able to answer.” Small town crime or a big city case, York always finds himself the bearer of just about as many secrets as he comes to solve.
In thought for a moment, he starts tapping his finger against his chest. Surveying that expansive entryway for another moment, a thought stirs. York only nods to himself—to Zach—in silence.
He moves on after all just as soon. “I’m investigating the disappearance of a man by the name Markus Lake.” Eyes back on her, there isn’t much to say to ease into this conversation, or keep it sounding like an easy little piece of gossip. And York isn’t one for that anyway. “Jesse, I’d like it better, if we could talk in private.”
