Merman!Remus for the Multiverse Monday 😭 Just imagine being the first human he interacts to, he would be so shy
Today is multiverse Monday!! Send me any au you can think of!!
The messy spattering of shells that littered the beach had quickly morphed into a glittering trail of colors, pinks blues and purples a stark contrast against the grainy, pale sand. Your toes squelched in the wet sand as you made your way across the beach, following the trail to a cove that was secluded from the rest of the ocean.
The water lapped gently at the walls of the cove, spraying foam onto your feet as you hesitantly walked inside. You noticed a large heart made out of the same shells you’d just been collecting, laid out on the sand that the water washed over at the back of the cove. You tilted your head sideways slightly, confused on who had laid out shells for who, but decided that it wasn’t your place, turning and ducking back out of the cove.
The voice made you freeze as it echoed around the walls of the cove, “Come back!”
You spun on your heel, eyes frantically scanning the cove to see who had called for you. You noticed a hand, a human hand stretched over a rock near the back of the alcove, hiding the person it belonged to behind the rock. You rushed over, sand clumping up under your feet and staining your pants as the water lapped at your ankles.
You finally reached the back of the cove and you peered around the rock, your eyes meeting nervous chocolate-tinted ones only inches away from you.
You screamed, throwing yourself back onto the rock behind you in your shock. Unfortunately, the tide that came in and pulled at your feet succeeded in yanking you off of the rocks, your screams muffled as water filled your mouth and you felt yourself tumble into the ocean.
You felt hands around you faster than you were able to process falling, wrapping around your waist and tugging you back onto shore.
You gasped for air, hands on your chest as if it would empty the water from your lungs. You coughed painfully, nose stinging as water had surged through it.
“I’m so sorry,” The same voice you’d heard earlier sounded again, this time from right in front of you as the man you’d met eyes with hovered in front of you worriedly, “I didn’t mean to scare you!”
You almost waved off his concern, but then your own grew, catching sight of something shining in the water behind him. It fluttered in the waves like butterflies on the breeze, surfacing and floating behind him.
Your brain realized that it was a tail before it accepted the information, half of you trying to make excuses for it and the other half ecstatic that you’d just found a merman.
“Oh my god,” You finally muttered, eyes wide and curious as you stared at him, “You’ve got a tail!”
“Um,” He seemed to realize why you’d been so quiet, tugging his tail down under the water as he floated in front of you, his cheeks growing rosy, “I don’t know what you’re talking about! You must have hit your head or something.”
“No,” You glared at him, peering down into the semi-clear water and seeing the shimmering tail, “It’s right there. I’m not dumb, I can see it.”
“Okay, okay,” He sighed, letting it float back up to the surface as he held himself up on shore, “You caught me. Listen, I didn’t mean to scare you, I’m sorry. I just saw you were collecting shells, and we’ve got a bunch down there,” He gestured to the ocean below him, “So I wanted to help you out.”
Your gaze drifted back to the seashell heart, tummy flip-flopping in excitement, “And why is it shaped like a heart?”
He groaned, letting his face slump into the water for a second, “Please don’t make me say it!”
“No,” You grinned, “Tell me!”
He finally looked back up at you, eyes shimmering as the sun streamed into the cove, “’Cause I thought you were cute.”
You’d been expecting the answer, but that didn’t make the admission any less exciting for you. You let out a soft giggle, reaching out to swipe some of the water that pooled under his eyes away, hand lingering on his cheek for a moment too long.
You stared at each other in serene silence for a moment, until he was jerked back under the water, eyes widening as he slipped away from you. You lurched forwards, trying to locate him under the murky waves but he surfaced quickly, eyes alight with panic.
“I gotta go! I gotta go,” Someone seemed to be pulling him under the water from below, unseen from the surface, “But come back! Promise me, come back.”
You nodded stiffly, “I promise!” as your anxious gaze locked on his own, watching as he slipped under the water. You sat in stunned silence in the cove for a few seconds, until a single pink seashell flew up out of the water and landed at your feet.
The sight of the shell had a smile gracing your features, and you plucked it out of the sand quickly, washing it off under the water. You refrained from adding the shell to your jar, instead keeping it tightly clutched in your hand as you stood, slowly making your way out of the cove and back to the main beach, your promise and your means to keep it running rampant around your scattered mind.
