Speake Rattus Rattus
Re-reading Queste, got to the bit where Ephaniah asks Stanley to send messages to Beetle's mum, Sarah, and Marcia, its mentioned that Stanley and Ephaniah can understand one another's squeaks, suggesting they share a Rat language. Well, it occurs to me that the spell Speake Rattus Rattus allows message rats speak to humans, so couldn't someone try it on Ephaniah, allowing him to speak to people without resorting to cards.
