You didn't misunderstand. I've used just "he" for most of my life, because that's what people around me referred to me as. I only started using "they" as an effort to separate myself from lightners, and everyone, really. I didn't know people who used exclusively "they/them" before, so I thought I was different. Then when I got out of that contrarian phase I just added the "he" back because that's what I was used to.
