Thinking about it now, little Sora might just’ve been straight up traumatized by the thought of a meteor crashing on the island, that his brain forcefully ended up making him forget about it. That’s a normal trauma reaction to some people, it’d confirm the fact that the COM scene did happen and Sora was the scared one, especially since Riku actually remembers it.

In KH1 Sora’s memory of the hidden place literally changes the sentence where he mention the meteor shower to just “did you hear”. Yet, when they later show Riku’s bit of the memory, Sora is talking about “the meteor shower night”.

After thinking about it, Sora forgetting Riku is an excellent thing: because we all know that he’ll be forced to remember him, right? And if he totally forgot about Riku, in a way or an other, he’ll be forced to remember him from the start. Like resetting a damaged device to make it work like it used to.

I actually think it’s Riku himself that will tell him who he is, what they are. Something like at the end of the game, where they’ll finally be able to reunite and have an alone time moment together. And since Sora doesn’t remember him, but feel like he’s somehow special, he’ll surely ask Riku. We’ll finally get how they met, since he’ll obviously start by the very start, and guess what is going to be brought up? The meteor shower memory, alongside the necklace. There’s no way this will not be brought up, the occasion is too perfect.

And if it’s not by Riku himself, it will by little moments through the whole game, Sora seeing two people acting in a specific way and be like “wait, I used to be like that with someone…” and such. With the help of Strelitzia being canonically bi, the hope that she teach Sora about love is so much bigger.
