Evaluation: Coughs are classified as either congested-nonproductive, congested-productive, or dry-hacking. The congestion element of the classification identifies whether the lower respiratory tract is congested. The productive element identifies whether the patient is moving the phlegm from the congested lungs (expectorating) to the pharynx to be swallowed. There are three important factors to consider when treating coughs: the frequency of the cough, the congestion of the lower respiratory tract, and the ability to expectorate. Cough suppressants are used to decrease the frequency of coughing. They are not indicated in congested-productive coughs of low frequency. In fact, the productive cough is useful in removing debris and excess phlegm from the lower respiratory tract. Suppressants are indicated in coughs of high frequency, especially dry/hacking coughs. A sore throat can be caused by direct irritation such as dryness or cough. Sprays and lozenges are used to treat the symptoms and may mask the underlying cause. The patient should be advised to see a doctor promptly if the sore throat is accompanied by a fever, swelling, headache, nausea, or vomiting.

Things I'm Grateful For #36 - Menthol and Camphor
El Niño coming along and hitting hard. Commuting to work is such a chore. A 20 minute walk feels like a 20 mile run. I can barely go thru a night without thinking about having the air conditioning on. Tonight for instance, I caved into the temptation because I was pouring sweat and had to shower twice in a night.
Which is why I’m so grateful for whoever who discovered menthol and camphor, and incorporated them into bath gels and talcum. As a proper wax princess who ‘melts’ at 28 Celsius and suffers from eczema, they are Godsend! Especially when the wax princess doesn’t like air conditioning all that much for sleep time.
