I’m extremely emotional when it comes to lost kings and causes, especially if the king is royal not only because of his title, but because of the achievements he left behind, and when the cause is just, as just as something human can be. People forget their history and they close their eyes and ears. But history is important. History is important for the future because history is important for the people. And if we just pretend that nothing matters anymore then we are not worthy of all this beauty that surrounds us. History is not always fair, it isn’t just, it isn’t a fairytale to put us to sleep. History has been brutal, filthy and sometimes fake. But not everything is a lie. And we can feel with our hearts and understand more with them. Wishing for better things to be while we ignore the things that have been and that are is hopeless. The future is important, and the present, and the past, for all that is alive.

30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?

I don’t read critics’ reviews very often, actually. Amateur reviewers, yes. If someone I follow on Tumblr or Goodreads or a coworker says a book is great, I’ll trust them, but someone who writes for a newspaper or website? That’s way more up in the air, partly because I skim a lot of website stuff, and partly because they never seem to review the books I really like.

That said, I think I agree with book critics more than I do movie critics. It’s nearly at the point where if a critic pans a film, I know I’ll enjoy it.

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?

That’s hard. I’m always tempted with that question to be altruistic and pick something like Linear A or the Indus Valley script, that we have no idea what those texts say. At the same time, I’d also love to be fluent in something from medieval continental Europe—France, Germany, Scandinavia…. I love the stories from that period and I’d like to be able to read them in the original.

34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?

You’re asking all the hard ones. >< I’m not totally sure. From my personal library, the history of musical notation is probably the scariest, as it’s 1000+ pages and highly academic. Also I really do need to finish Neal Stephenson’s Baroque trilogy.
