Mythical Pokemon 2016 - Who's Who: MEW
Let's take a brief look at who's coming out to play in 2016:

Mew (Japanese: ミュウ Mew) Generation I
THE MEW-DOWN:
Mew, also known as the "Ancestor of all Pokemon," is considered the rarest Pokémon of them all.
Mew is a very powerful, pink cat-type creature. Picture one of those weird, hairless cats, but a really cute looking version, flying through the air making squeaking noises.
It is said that Mew's DNA possesses the genetic composition of all existing Pokémon species, allowing it to use all known Pokémon techniques, as well devolve Pokémon, AND change into any Pokémon.
Mew is the last Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex.
Mew is a Psychic-type, Mythical Pokémon, not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. It is a member of the Mew duo along with Mewtwo. However, whilst Mew is considered a mythical pokémon, Mewtwo is considered a legendary pokémon.
In the games, Mew is only ever mentioned in journals on Cinnabar Island, where it was stated that Mew had given birth to Mewtwo.

AND TO THINK IT ALMOST NEVER WAS..
Initially, Mew was not an official pokémon, but a last minute, unsanctioned addition by Game Freak programmer Shigeki Morimoto.
Mew was added at the very end of the development of Pokémon Red and Blue, after the removal of debug features, freeing up just enough space to add another character - which they did! This is despite being told not to alter the game in any way.
This sneaky addition was only meant to be accessible to the Game Freak staff. Their very own super-psychic plaything. Luckily for the rest us, a glitch in the game meant that everybody was able to encounter Mew!
So, thanks to the cheekiness/creative genius of the Game Freak staff, the games was most popular pokémon character was born. The revealing and distribution of Mew through organized events has been noted as a major reason for the series' success in Japan. I hope they gave Shigeki Morimoto a nice bonus!
