-metaphors and realities- I picked up Murakami to see what the hype was about. So far I've read two of his books - Kafka on the Shore and the Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Some words that may describe his work are : strange, mind-bending, profound. The characters Murakami creates are often subjected to unusual experiences that range from lucid dreams to profound hallucinations to extraordinary events in parallel worlds. Through the course of the book the reader and the developing characters may realise these experiences are , in one way or the other, metaphors - metaphors that have critical impact on the characters' stories. A recurring theme in these metaphors was that they were, almost all, beyond my comprehension. This bothered me, as I felt like I was underestimating their significance. Murakami was trying to tell me something - that, in the real world too , such metaphors have pronounced relevance. I realised they are relevant because most people think in metaphors - and in turn it's what drives the world. This breakthrough got me determined to understand them, as now, I could not afford them to be beyond me. However, my usual methods of logic and reasoning would not work here and I had to 'just go with the flow' - so I finished Kafka and picked up Wind-up Bird. Through the course of this second book I had a counter-realisation: it may be likely that I am the one who thinks in Metaphors, while consciously believing in logic and reasoning to be the core of my thought process. I couldn't decide - is it me or the rest of the world that is thinking in these strange metaphors? . . . .
